Director - Clinical Business Development

Director/Senior Director, Business Development (BD)

The Director/Senior Director, Business Development (BD) is responsible for driving sales growth across an assigned geographic territory or group of accounts, blending strategic account expansion with targeted new business development. This role balances proactive growth of existing accounts with the pursuit of new opportunities through tailored engagement plans, relationship building, and cross-functional solution development. By leveraging data-driven insights and prioritizing resources, this leader delivers both short-term results and long-term value, strengthening Syneos Health’s presence in the biopharmaceutical industry.


Responsibilities

Strategic Sales Execution

  • Develops and implements an annual sales plan for assigned markets/accounts, including:
    • Forecasting and objective setting
    • Quarterly reviews to adjust strategies based on evolving client needs
  • Prioritizes accounts and territories using data-driven insights on client opportunity and market potential
  • Aligns monthly objectives with the sales plan, optimising time and resource management for target achievement

Account & Relationship Management

  • Creates and executes strategic account plans, identifying client challenges and collaborating with internal teams to deliver solutions
  • Builds and nurtures high-value relationships with key decision-makers and influencers to expand account reach
  • Designs and leads multi-touchpoint sales strategies tailored to client needs, industry dynamics, and organisational goals

Revenue Growth & Expansion

  • Drives account expansion tactics, including:
    • Therapeutic alignment
    • Contract renewals
    • Next-phase opportunity discovery
  • Guides cross-functional collaboration with teams such as operations, therapeutic strategy, deal strategy, and delivery to develop custom, client-centric solutions

Operational & Compliance Oversight

  • Maintains updated CRM records (Salesforce) for client activity, pipeline, and sales progress tracking
  • Advocates for internal alignment, sharing client insights (e.g., culture, preferences, priorities) to inform proposal development
  • Educates clients on Syneos Health’s differentiated value proposition, including clinical and commercial offering evolution

Requirements

Essential Experience

  • Proven B2B sales or client relationship management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field, or equivalent education/experience
  • Significant industry experience in clinical trials and biopharmaceuticals (pharmaceutical sector familiarity is mandatory)
  • Deep understanding of:
    • Drug development lifecycle
    • Clinical research service lines
  • Expertise in:
    • Selling complex, high-value solutions
    • Engaging mid- to executive-level clients
    • Addressing customer needs with consultative collaboration

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strategic Sell: Ability to discover needs and co-create bespoke solutions
  • Communication & Presentation: Strong presentation skills for industry events and client interactions
  • Industry Utility: Tracks market trends, competitor insights, and emerging client preferences
  • Territory Leadership: Produces strategic reviews of territory performance and pipeline integrity
  • Technological Proficiency: Fluent in MS Office Suite, Google Workspace, and CRM platforms (Salesforce)
