Minimum qualifications:
- JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- 15 years of experience with employment law and of managing employment law issues in multiple jurisdictions in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
- Experience in people management.
- Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice employment law (e.g. have registered in-house status) in the country in which the position is located.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience developing, implementing, and using legal department technology.
- Experience working in a regional employment legal role and on HR projects across multiple jurisdictions, with the ability to identify issues, manage matters independently and with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate difficult legal concepts concisely.
- Excellent problem-solving capabilities, sometimes in the case of unknowns.
- Excellent organizational, project management, and execution skills with a collaborative and flexible approach when partnering with others.
About The Job
As Director, Employment Legal, your primary responsibility will be to manage the daily operations of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Employment Legal team and provide strategy, direction, and outlook for its growth, improvement, and continued success.
The team, which is based in various EMEA countries, provides employment legal advice on a wide range of topics across the region, including general advice and counsel, litigation, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, HR compliance projects, Works Council and European Works Council issues, regulatory issues, mergers and acquisitions, and employment legal issues connected to Google’s commercial agreements and extended workforce.

Your aim will be to lead, motivate, and develop the team. Your role will be to create an inclusive team environment in which all team members feel like they belong and to support the team in providing advice that enables Google to operate and achieve consistency, and compliance with local employment law, regulations, and practice, while at the same time recognizing the flexible and innovative place it strives to be. You will work closely with HR, business, and Legal colleagues in Google offices around the world.
In this role, you will prioritize the demands of multiple regional and global internal clients, and are flexible enough to adapt to their needs in what can be a fast paced and changing environment. You will be highly organized and have the ability to work collaboratively with a willingness to develop close working relationships with your peers in Global Employment Legal, and other executive EMEA leaders to ensure alignment and partnership are essential attributes for this role.

Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice to executive stakeholders across Google People Operations, Google Legal, and Google more broadly on a variety of employment legal topics.
- Manage a team, including team development and recruitment of new team members.
- Identify and implement scaling, efficient and process improvements for EMEA Employment Legal’s daily legal activities and other practice improvement projects that can be leveraged globally where possible.
- Manage EMEA Employment Legal’s relationships with outside counsel and other providers.
- Contribute to collaboration and knowledge sharing with your regional peers and across the Global Employment Legal team. Help develop the strategy of the Global Employment Legal team, and implement that in EMEA.
