About the Role
We are seeking an experienced SHQ Director based in our Manchester office with a proven track record in:
- Health & Safety (H&S) consultancy
- Principal Designer responsibilities
- CDM (Construction Design and Management) advisory
Your role will focus on delivering strategic H&S services, supporting business growth, and collaborating across multiple projects. You will engage with clients, design teams and stakeholders to ensure compliance, best practice and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
Client & Project Delivery
- Provide expert H&S guidance on construction and design safety matters to clients and internal colleagues.
- Lead the Principal Designer role on high-profile projects, including:
- Coordinating design team meetings
- Supporting clients in developing H&S arrangements/Project Briefs
- Facilitating workshops/seminars on client duties
- Offer strategic advice on CDM Regulations 2015 and industry-specific health and safety standards.
- Conduct onsite inspections, assess compliance performance, and identify improvement actions.
- Audit client supply chain compliance against Principal Contractor and Principal Designer obligations.
- Evaluate and approve client H&S and project management systems to ensure adherence to CDM 2015.

Business Development & Relationship Management
- Develop and nurture industry relationships with clients, stakeholders, and potential partners.
- Deliver H&S training to clients, project teams and internal teams, including workshops and presentations.
- Conduct audits of client/supply chain safety management systems, ensuring applications are robust.
- Support proposals for new business opportunities through:
- Technical articles
- Speaking engagements
- Bid support efforts
Operational & Compliance Responsibilities
- Ensure alignment with Turner & Townsend’s SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) control requirements as applicable.
Requirements
Qualifications

Degree or Master’s Degree in one of the following areas:
- Health & Safety
- Environmental Science
- Engineering

Preference for/working toward Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH).

Membership of relevant industry bodies such as:
- APS (Associated Principals in Safety)
- IOB (Institute of Occupational Biology)
- CQI (Chartered Quality Institute)

Experience & Skills
- Multi-sector construction expertise, with demonstrated leadership in Principal Designer or Safety Advisor roles.
- Exceptional programme and project management capabilities.
- Strong business awareness, with the ability to identify sales opportunities and propose value-added services.
- Proven ability to lead and collaborate, including self-directed project delivery.
- Commitment to delivering high levels of client satisfaction and contractual compliance.
