About the Horniman Museum and Gardens
The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a unique attraction in south east London where global cultures and the natural world are brought together for everyone to enjoy. The Museum holds internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as a popular natural history gallery and Aquarium. The 16 acres of beautiful Gardens include a tropical Butterfly House and offer stunning views across London.
About the Role
We are seeking an ambitious and strategic leader for a fixed-term maternity cover role with a strong background in audience development, communications, and income generation to join the Horniman’s senior management team.
During 2026–2027, the Horniman is celebrating its 125th anniversary and the completion of a major capital project, Nature + Love, culminating in the reopening of the natural history gallery in early 2027. Successful delivery of the communications, fundraising, digital, visitor experience, commercial, and events programming plans for this landmark project are central to this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership to the commercial, digital, events programming, fundraising and membership, marketing and communications, and visitor experience teams
- Oversee and champion the Horniman’s audience, brand, marketing and communications, digital, and income generation strategies, aligning them with the Forward Plan and the Horniman mission
- Lead on brand positioning as a leading cultural institution and visitor attraction, aiming to extend and diversify audiences and income streams
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the Horniman as a senior management team member, supporting long-term planning, budget management, and workforce development

About You
You will have experience in leading successful audience growth campaigns, commercial, and fundraising initiatives within cultural, heritage, or visitor attraction organisations. You should also demonstrate:
- Strong communication and influencing skills, including negotiation, presenting, and writing for diverse audiences
- A passionate interest in creative programming that welcomes diverse audiences
- Exceptional people management abilities and the capacity to deliver high-performance outcomes in a fast-paced environment

- Project, people, and team leadership expertise, with an ability to lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams and collaborate effectively within leadership structures
- Strong financial management skills, including budget setting and financial target achievement
- A strategic mindset complemented by flexibility and hands-on operational engagement
- Creative and entrepreneurial thinking, with a results-driven focus
