About the Role
The Director of Business Development is a new and critical role within the Daily Mail subscriptions team. Daily Mail has a target of reaching 1 million subscribers by FY2028, and to achieve that, it will be critical to identify and develop new areas for growth. We believe there are significant opportunities to develop our core offering to create new revenue and growth — for example, by strengthening our formats, better capitalising on major events, and expanding our video and audio offering. In addition, we strongly believe we need to grow our subscription portfolio by exploring new verticals and possible standalone subscription products.
This role will focus on identifying and building the growth opportunities that our current operational model does not yet fully address, with a focus on the medium and upper funnel. It reports directly to the Group MD Subscriptions and sits at the centre of our forward growth strategy.
Main Responsibilities
- Develop our core offering — drive the development of key product areas that deepen subscriber value, working closely with the newsroom and the wider organisation to make this happen
- Vertical strategy & development — identify and develop the subscription verticals with the greatest growth potential, taking ownership of how they are built out; examples could include Crime Desk, Puzzles, This is Money, and Royals, with the ambition that some could evolve into standalone hubs or separate subscription propositions over time
- Emerging proposition development — scope and develop new subscription opportunities in areas with significant untapped potential, taking ideas from concept through to commercial delivery
- Support the Group MD to identify where the biggest growth opportunities lie and ensure the right resources and focus are applied to them

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
