About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Director of EMS & Controls Engineering to lead the design, development, deployment and continuous improvement of Energy Management Systems (EMS), control systems and software platforms that power our Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions.
This is a senior technical leadership role combining systems architecture, controls engineering, power systems expertise, software leadership and customer engagement.
The successful candidate will own the technical direction of our EMS platform, ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of grid-scale energy storage systems. They will lead multidisciplinary teams spanning controls, embedded, firmware and software engineering while acting as the technical authority for customers, partners and internal stakeholders.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in industrial automation, power systems, BESS technology, SCADA systems and controls engineering who can bridge strategic leadership with deep technical expertise.
Key Responsibilities
EMS Architecture & Control Systems
- Define and own the architecture and technical roadmap for the company's Energy Management System (EMS).
- Lead the development of advanced control algorithms for BESS and hybrid energy solutions.
- Ensure seamless integration between EMS platforms and site equipment.
- Define system-level control strategies for energy optimisation, grid services and operational reliability.
- Drive the evolution of software, firmware and control systems to support future product development.
Controls & Power Systems Engineering
- Lead the design and implementation of control systems for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.
- Oversee integration with:
- Battery Management Systems (BMS)
- PLCs
- Inverters
- Generators
- Meters
- Sensors
- SCADA platforms
- Ensure system performance, operational resilience and compliance with industry standards.
- Provide technical leadership for commissioning, testing and validation activities.

- Build, lead and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team comprising:
- Controls Engineers
- Embedded Engineers
- Firmware Engineers
- Software Engineers
- Systems Engineers
- Establish engineering standards, governance and best practice.
- Mentor senior engineers and develop future technical leaders.
- Create a high-performance culture focused on innovation, quality and delivery excellence.
Product Delivery & Commissioning
- Own deployment, commissioning and operational standards across all projects.
- Ensure solutions are delivered safely, on time and to the required quality standards.
- Provide technical oversight throughout the project lifecycle from concept through to operational handover.
- Lead root-cause investigations and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the senior technical interface for customers, consultants and strategic partners.
- Support business development activities, tenders and technical proposals.
- Present complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Build trusted long-term relationships with customers and stakeholders.
Cybersecurity & Operational Reliability
- Define and implement cybersecurity best practices across operational technology (OT) environments.
- Ensure systems are secure, scalable and resilient.
- Drive compliance with relevant industry regulations and standards.
- Develop strategies for operational reliability and performance optimisation.
Innovation & Technology Strategy
- Monitor emerging trends in:
- Energy Storage
- Power Systems
- Industrial Automation
- Grid Integration
- Controls Engineering
- Identify opportunities for technology innovation and product enhancement.
- Work closely with senior leadership to align engineering activities with business objectives and growth plans.
Essential Experience
- Proven experience in a senior engineering leadership role such as:
- Director of Controls Engineering
- Head of Controls Engineering
- Director of EMS Engineering
- Head of Energy Management Systems
- Automation Engineering Manager
- Technical Director (Energy Systems)
- Strong experience delivering Energy Management Systems (EMS).
- Extensive knowledge of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Experience designing and implementing control systems within industrial or utility-scale environments.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong customer-facing and stakeholder management experience.
- Proven track record delivering complex engineering projects.
