Director of Engineering
Role Context & Purpose
Reporting to a Senior Director, the Director of Engineering (DoE) provides the delivery capability to allow the ambitions and commitments of the Engineer Group Strategy to be achieved. In certain circumstances, the DoE is responsible for delivering a specific mission with a clearly defined outcome. When that outcome is successfully achieved, the DoE will then transition to the next business priority. Partnering principally with LMIT Senior Directors, and in some cases the CIO and other Directors of Engineering within the LIT account, the DOE is responsible for the overall Account Strategy which balances customer expectations with LIT aspirations.
The DoE leads the Engineering Group leadership team, ensuring that subgroup plans align with the overall Engineering Group Strategy. They are primarily responsible for ensuring that the Unit plans can be executed in the most efficient and effective manner using a data centric approach, delivering digital offerings that transform the enterprise. They will ensure not only timely delivery against commitments but will optimize for quality and cost through continually evolving and challenging the delivery strategy and practices within their assigned units. Delivery capacity will be managed in line with customer needs and expectations, and utilization will be proactively managed and monitored.
In partnership with the leadership team they will ensure that skills and capabilities evolve rapidly in line with anticipated account needs. The DoE is responsible for driving Talent Management activities throughout the account, providing insight to account high potential and high performing senior talent, identifying and mitigating risks in succession and talent pipelines and actively providing development opportunities for successors to business-critical roles.
Key Responsibilities: Operations & Delivery In conjunction with the Senior Leadership and executive teams, develop and influence the Engineering Group Strategy to set direction, create achievable delivery commitments, ensuring it delivers on both the Engineering Group’s and LIT’s ambitions. • Accountable for ensuring delivery commitments are met effectively and efficiently when measured against best in class. • Drive delivery excellence mindset across the Engineering Group and optimise for delivery outcomes. Inspire and facilitate the LIT leadership community to create a world class delivery capability for scaled agile engagements and beyond e.g. SAFe • Optimize outcomes for LM Business by Identifying opportunities for reuse focusing on higher level capabilities (e.g. business capability reuse) • Manage risks across their area of responsibility, supporting LIT leaders in taking reasonable risks. • Foster an accountable, outcome and results oriented working environment across aligned subgroups, monitoring the effectiveness of Engineering Group operating efficiency. • In partnership with Leadership ensure that the “common purpose” of units is regularly reviewed and take action to ensure that the unit operating models and structure remains dynamic and effective. • Develop and refine a “delivery playbook” that optimizes how delivery is performed across the DoE area of responsibility, focusing on technical and business risk management, predictability, quality and efficiency of operation. • Provide technical capabilities on time that are measured against pre-determined quality standards, account plans and budgets.

Business Development & Innovation. • Support leaders to create the environment where units can proactively refresh their business portfolio and position LIT as a leading light in LMs digital transformation. • Drive business through existing customers and ensure LIT is positioned to add maximum value, developing a proactive action plan that addresses customers’ requirements now and in future in a way that leverages and elevates LIT’s unique value proposition. • Partner with different areas of Liberty IT and LMIT to identify and support the introduction and development of emergent business capabilities and optimize for reuse / leveraging these capabilities across the LIT org. • Support adjacent Engineering Group level innovation • Act as an advocate for Liberty IT; driving the future growth of the company by promoting the LIT brand internally and externally. • Conversant with Insurtech trends and practices • Building a strong relationship and understanding with Liberty Mutual senior IT leaders within allotted areas of responsibility.
Alignment & Collaboration • Act as the senior leadership focus for several units offering direction, coaching and support, ensuring that subgroups have the correct purpose, capabilities, and skills to support their accounts. • Engage effectively with LIT Steering group to understand and align on the company vision and strategy. • Drive effective communication across their area of responsibility to ensure common understanding of the company strategy and goals amongst employees. • Create an open and collaborative working environment; be flexible, adaptable and have a willingness to learn. • Continually strive to ensure close alignment and active cross-unit collaboration within the account team. Provide a positive contribution to LIT’s strategic ambition and ensure that a balanced, inclusive ‘company view’ is taken in all decision making (e.g. talent development and resource allocation).
Team Building & Engagement • Ensure the ongoing evaluation and review of potential development needs of subgroups, teams and individuals to ensure LIT employees are highly motivated and best placed to provide a compelling value proposition for customers. • Support organizational talent and skills needs through the development of a robust talent pipeline across their units and the wider organization. • Determine a resource strategy and plan, mobilising talent to address business priorities with a one LIT approach and mindset. • Identify future skills and capability needs for the account and ensure that talent development plans are created to proactively address those opportunities. • Inspire and engage Leadership, sell the compelling vision, and accelerate team performance. • Support Leadership Team in promotion of a culture of structured experimentation and continuous improvement leading to the development of high-performance teams within their Units. • Create a coaching environment which develops capability and empowers people, thereby enhancing high performance morale and productivity. Ensure that LITs values and associated behaviours are adhered to by everyone regardless of role or position • Foster an inclusive and equitable workplace, demonstrating that DEI is fundamental to how they do business. Be visible across account, creating an engaging and motivating environment and role modelling active leadership in all interactions • Deal effectively with performance issues in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience • A minimum of 3 year’s senior leadership experience in a technical environment • In-depth knowledge of current industry trends around technology and capabilities. • Broad knowledge of IT concepts,strategies and methodologies • Previous leadership of and competence with people and organisational processes, including introducing and facilitating a high performance culture among teams. • Experience in managing projects from conception to successful implementation • Experience in and commitment towards driving and implementing change and continuous improvement across complex environments / involving large groups of stakeholders. • Strategic thinker; experienced in setting department and project objectives and key results (OKR’s) to support overall company strategy and direction. • Proven experience of developing deep knowledge of Mutual business operations, strategies and objectives.
