Director of Engineering / Chief Architect

Engineering Strategy | Developer Experience | SDLC Transformation | AI Adoption

Surrey (Hybrid – 2 days per week)

£140,000 + 20% Bonus + Outstanding Benefits

The Opportunity

Wedo has partnered with one of the world's leading financial services organisations. Their technology division consists of more than 500 software engineers building enterprise software used hundreds of millions of people each year.

Over the past few years, they've deliberately empowered their engineering teams to operate with greater autonomy. Each engineering stack has evolved its own technologies, tooling and ways of working, helping teams move quickly and make decisions closer to the problems they're solving. That autonomy has been a success and now they're entering the next phase.

The Role

This isn't a traditional Director of Engineering position. There are no direct reports. This is a high-impact role.

Success isn't measured by the size of the team you manage. Instead, it's measured by your ability to influence engineering leaders, shape technical direction and improve how hundreds of engineers build software every day.

You'll work across the entire engineering organisation, partnering closely with the Head of Architecture, Platform Engineering and Senior Engineering Leaders to improve engineering practices, modernise the software development lifecycle and create a better developer experience.

Rather than owning a specific product area, you'll help define how engineering is delivered across the organisation, ensuring teams remain autonomous whilst introducing greater consistency where it genuinely adds value.

Think of this as a technical CTO operating within a large enterprise engineering organisation.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Driving engineering excellence across five autonomous engineering organisations.
  • Evolving the software development lifecycle to improve quality, delivery predictability and developer experience.
  • Championing modern engineering practices including cloud-native engineering, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, DevOps and AI-assisted software development.
  • Helping embed AI throughout the software development lifecycle to improve engineering productivity.
  • Defining meaningful engineering metrics that provide genuine insight into engineering performance, rather than simply measuring activity.
  • Identifying opportunities to standardise tooling and increase shared engineering capability where it creates value.
  • Reducing unnecessary manual engineering processes through better automation, tooling and engineering workflows.
  • Partnering with Engineering Leaders, Architecture, Platform Engineering and Product teams to solve complex technical and organisational challenges.
  • Acting as one of the organisation's senior engineering advisors, helping shape engineering strategy across the wider technology function.

Who We're Looking For

This role is less about following a specific career path and more about having solved similar organisational challenges before.

You might currently be a:

  • CTO / Director of Engineering / Chief Engineer / VP of Engineering / Principal Engineer / Distinguished Engineer

What's most important is your ability to influence at scale. Scale meaning, you’ve operated across multiple business lines with at least 150 across tech & engineering.

You'll bring:

  • Deep software engineering experience across modern engineering environments.
  • Strong technical credibility with senior engineers and engineering leaders.
  • Experience improving engineering practices across multiple teams or business units.
  • A track record of influencing technical strategy without relying on hierarchy.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build alignment across experienced technical stakeholders.
  • Broad knowledge of cloud technologies, platform engineering, modern SDLC practices and engineering tooling.
  • Strong judgement, commercial awareness and a pragmatic approach to engineering change.
  • Experience within financial services, insurance or another regulated environment would be beneficial but isn't essential.

Why Join?

Opportunities like this don't come around very often.

It's rare to find a role where you're given the mandate to influence how more than 500 engineers build software, whilst working alongside experienced engineering leaders who genuinely want to evolve engineering capability across the organisation.

You'll have the opportunity to shape engineering practices, improve developer experience, embed AI into the software development lifecycle and help define what engineering excellence looks like at enterprise scale.

If you're motivated by solving organisation-wide engineering challenges, influencing technical direction through credibility rather than hierarchy and leaving a lasting impact on how engineering teams operate, this is a genuinely unique opportunity.
