Director of Software Engineering | London (Hybrid)

numi is partnering with a global, technology-driven financial services organisation to find an exceptional Director of Software Engineering to head up a major engineering function in London. In this role, you will lead a large-scale department of over 80+ technologists (Software Engineers and Architects). We’re looking for a results-oriented tech leader who can seamlessly switch from high-level executive roadmap discussions to going toe-to-toe with top engineers on technical rigour. What you’ll do: Lead, mentor, and elevate a team of 80+ engineers operating at scale within a complex, regulated environment (managing a blend of internal associates and third-party engineers). Partner closely with Product and Design teams to drive the overall product roadmap for key business capabilities. Act as a key voice in technical design reviews, ensuring a clear and consistent approach to engineering practices. Liaise with and manage senior enterprise stakeholders (primarily US-based) to provide clear cost/risk trade-offs and paths forward. Drive effective delivery with pace and precision across multiple cross-functional "outcome teams." What we’re looking for: Proven Leadership: A clear track record of managing and scaling large software engineering teams and driving high performance. Technical Credibility: Real-world experience with modern architectures, specifically native developments within AWS. Security Mindset: A strong understanding of the latest cybersecurity trends and how they impact software engineering practices. Strategic Problem-Solving: Ability to solve complex challenges across people, process, and technology, cutting through ambiguity to provide clear direction. Domain Knowledge: Prior experience in the UK/US regulatory, consumer lending, or broader financial technology landscapes is highly preferred. Location & Setup: This is a permanent, hybrid role based in Central London. You will be working from a state-of-the-art office 3 days a week to foster collaboration and team connection.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
