Global Treasury, a segment of the American Express Finance group, is responsible for providing a balance sheet that provides a competitive advantage for the company. This includes managing capital to support our business; delivering cost-effective, diverse and resilient funding; and identifying, measuring and addressing financial and operational risks.

Global Treasury have an exciting opportunity for someone to join us as Director, Global Treasury Operations EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa), leading a team responsible for overseeing cash management and FX operational activities.

Reporting to the Vice President of Global Treasury Operations (GTO) EMEA, This role ensures all cash management transactions, including intracompany & intercompany financings, payables/receivables, debt instruments, and M&A activities are executed in a highly controlled manner adhering to all applicable American Express policies and control standards. This role is also responsible for the complex American Express Global Foreign Exchange management processes providing P&L protection against FX rate volatility related to balance sheet, equity and future income streams.

As a Treasury leader the individual also provides guidance to adjacent Treasury, other Finance and business unit teams, supporting complex initiatives against delivery of business unit goals. Additional responsibilities include supporting regulatory, control & compliance initiatives to provide value across the organization and representing AXP in engagements with bank partners.

This position is important to fulfilling Global Treasury Operations mission of ensuring that American Express has the right amount of money, at the right time and place, and in the right currency to fulfill its financial commitments.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the management of cash flow and associated processes for American Express entities across the EMEA region by ensuring operating requirements are fulfilled and cost of funds is optimized
  • Leads the management of foreign exchange trading execution processes for American Express globally minimizing risk and clearing exposure while optimizing trading price efficiencies
  • Ensures that daily processes operate within a strong controlled and compliant operating environment by ensuring that processes meet or exceed regulatory, American Express policy and other relevant standards while operating with knowledge of and in consideration of the competitive framework
  • Leads and/or participates in Treasury initiatives in adjacent fields that involve capital, legal entity, liquidity risk management, and regulatory oversight
  • Designs, implements, controls and optimizes a banking/bank account structure that achieves business objectives, maximizes cash availability, and minimizes operating expense
  • Pursues operational excellence through continuous improvement in execution, enhanced controls, intelligent process standardization and automation
  • Engaging with stakeholders to address operational challenges and to identify and collaborate on effective solutions
  • Leads, motivates and develops a team of Treasury professionals

Qualifications

  • Extensive Finance/Treasury experience
  • Deep background and experience with process/operational management ideally including experience leading a daily operational function
  • Knowledge of and experience in International Treasury operations and expertise in transaction banking and market payment systems and processes
  • Knowledge of Foreign Exchange exposure management, FX market trading and Volcker Rule prohibitions
  • Knowledge of AXP’s businesses and its business model and correlation to Treasury activities
  • Experience working with Gen AI tools to increase efficiency, drive automation, and build intelligent workflows
  • Strong attention to detail, proven ability to challenge the status quo and drive change, innovative problem solving and self-driven delivery across multiple work streams
  • Proven team leader – inclusive people leader who can lead, develop and inspire others through coaching, feedback, recognition and encouragement
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, capable of synthesizing complex information and communicating key messages
  • Experience of influencing without authority and collaborating across organizational boundaries at all levels
