The Academy of Medical Sciences – Director of Grants and Programmes
The Academy of Medical Sciences – who run some of the most valued grant schemes and development programmes in UK biomedical and health research – are looking for a Director of Grants and Programmes to join their Senior Leadership Team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leading the design and delivery of the Academy’s grant schemes and programmes.
- Deciding what the Academy should fund, running on the evidence you build.
- Building and taking care of a strong set of partners, along with forging new partnerships that diversify the Academy’s income.
- Working in close partnership with the Fellowship, drawing well on the expertise and time that Fellows give towards mentoring, on selection panels and in programme design.
- Leading the team to work closely with the Academy’s monitoring and evaluation function.
- Leading and empowering a talented team, backing them with support, coaching and development.
- Managing a substantial budget with the Finance team, directing people and money where they have the most effect.
- Playing a full part in the Senior Leadership Team, sharing responsibility for the Academy as a whole.

Skills and Experience:
- Excellent delivery: Proven track record of delivering grant programmes or large-scale initiatives on time and within budget, with strong governance, compliance, risk management, and portfolio oversight.
- Partnerships and negotiation: Experience building strategic partnerships across funders, delivery organisations, industry, and government, with strong negotiation skills and a track record of securing successful agreements.
- Credibility across stakeholders: Able to engage effectively with senior scientific leaders, early-career researchers, funders, government, and industry, while championing diversity and widening participation.
- Focus on impact: Committed to using evaluation and evidence to improve programmes, inform future strategy, and maximise benefits for researchers, patients, and society.
- Leading and empowering people: An inspiring leader who empowers teams through trust, coaching, and support, fostering a high-performing and inclusive culture.
- Collective leadership: Collaborative Senior Leadership Team member who contributes beyond their own remit, constructively challenges, supports colleagues, and helps shape a positive organisational culture.

Salary:
£120,000 - £145,000.
Contract and Hours:
Permanent, 37.5 hours per week.
Location:
London/hybrid working – minimum 50% in-person collaboration.
