Director of Onshore Asset Management
Onshore Renewables Leadership Role
Base Location: You’ll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in one of the following locations: Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Havant, Reading, London, Belfast, or Dublin (other SSER locations can also be considered).
Salary & Compensation: £124,200 – £186,200 / €165,600–€248,400 +

The Role
Strategic Leadership Opportunity
Are you an experienced leader with a passion for renewable energy, commercial performance, and operational excellence? This is an exciting opportunity to lead the strategic, operational, and commercial performance of SSE’s onshore renewable asset portfolio across the UK, Ireland, and Europe.
As a member of the Onshore Renewables Leadership Team, you’ll play a key role in shaping business strategy and maximising value while supporting ambitious growth plans.
Your overall accountability will be to balance safe, reliable, and efficient operations with strong commercial performance, ensuring assets deliver long-term value—all while supporting the transition to net zero.
Responsibilities
Team & Operational Leadership
- Lead and inspire a diverse team of employees and delivery partners to:
- Operate onshore renewable assets safely, efficiently, and sustainably
- Foster an inclusive, high-performing culture built on:
- Continuous improvement
- Innovation
- Operational excellence
Strategic Portfolio Management
- Develop and deliver short-, medium-, and long-term strategies for:
- Operational performance
- Maintenance
- Asset lifecycle management
- Optimise safety, reliability, availability, production, and whole-life asset value
- Drive continuous improvement across the portfolio
Commercial Performance & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Maximise commercial performance by balancing operational and commercial priorities, working closely with:
- Finance
- Energy Markets
- Commercial & Investment teams
- Key responsibilities:
- Optimise revenue
- Manage risk
- Oversee capital investment programmes
- Support portfolio investment and divestment decisions

Digital Transformation Leadership
- Champion the digital transformation of the asset portfolio by:
- Promoting data-driven decision-making
- Leading adoption of digital technologies and AI
- Focus areas:
- Asset performance monitoring
- Predictive maintenance
- Operational decision-making
- Fleet optimisation & forecasting
Representation & External Governance
- Represent SSE in:
- Joint Venture partnerships
- Governance forums
- Boards (where required)
- Contribute to:
- Business strategy
- Portfolio growth
- Organisational transformation
- Ensure long-term success of the onshore renewables business
Requirements & Qualifications
Senior Leadership Experience
- Proven track record in:
- Asset management
- Operational leadership (or related commercial environments)
- Ability to balance:
- Operational performance
- Commercial outcomes
- Long-term asset value
Commercial Acumen & Budgeting
- Experience managing substantial operational budgets
- Leadership of capital investment programmes
- Negotiation skills with suppliers and stakeholders
- Strategic decision-making to maximise portfolio value and shareholder returns
Renewable Energy Expertise
- Deep understanding of:
- Renewable energy markets
- Commercial drivers influencing asset lifecycle
- Experience developing long-term strategies in:
- Operational performance
- Maintenance
- Asset management
Team & Culture Leadership
- Proven success in leading high-performing, inclusive teams through change
- Cultural expertise in embedding:
- Safety
- Collaboration
- Continuous improvement
- Innovation & digital adoption
Soft Skills & Influence
