Director of Operations
Director of Operations - NHS Blood and Transplant
High profile leadership role in a national organisation dedicated to saving and improving lives
About NHSBT
As an essential part of the NHS, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) works to maximise the impact of every donation—from blood and organs to tissues and stem cells. We go beyond healthcare—we are also a complex supply chain, a biomedical manufacturer, and a partner in research and innovation.
At our core, we empower daily acts of generosity—from thousands of blood donors giving their time daily, to families, in moments of grief, who consent for organ and tissue donation. Every donation we facilitate helps transform lives, and it is for these donors and their families that we strive to be the best in every aspect of our work.
The operational landscape is evolving: increasing demand, emerging technologies, and the need for greater efficiency and sustainability. This creates significant opportunities for transformation, including:
- Modernising operations
- Embracing digital innovation
- Strengthening partnerships to ensure resilience and future readiness
Our mission is clear: to save and improve more lives by ensuring every patient receives the donation they need. To achieve this, our focus is on five key priorities:
- Growing and diversifying our donor base
- Modernising our operations
- Driving innovation into practice
- Collaborating with partners
- Investing in our people and culture

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
