The Vacancy

Technical Services Director

Binnies, an RSK Group company, is looking for a Technical Services Director, due to unprecedented growth in our business, an increasing market for technical services internally and a growing external client base.

Reporting to the Director of Water Services, the Technical Services Director is responsible for leading and expanding Binnies' technical services capability, delivering specialist expertise to UK projects and external clients across domestic and international markets. The role includes defining and implementing a growth strategy for the technical services business.

The technical services department currently comprises:

  • Hydraulics
  • Geotechnical
  • Pipelines
  • Dams and Reservoirs
  • CAD
  • Geospatial Services
  • Network Modelling

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

Technical Services Leadership

  • Lead and continuously develop the technical services department in a safe and healthy manner.
  • Ensure high-quality technical delivery, robust technical governance, assurance, and quality control processes are embedded across all projects.
  • Define and implement a technical services strategy aligned with business year-on-year growth objectives.
  • Develop specialist capabilities and centres of excellence to strengthen competitive advantage in all technical services teams.
  • Collaborate with wider Binnies and RSK technical networks to share expertise and leverage best practice.
  • Share information and good practice as a member of the Water Services Leadership Team.

Client Focus

  • Uphold relationships with Binnies internal stakeholders to ensure their technical service project needs are met.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of the markets that the technical services teams work in and future client challenges.
  • Develop work winning client relationships with new and existing clients, supported by our subject matter experts.
  • Develop winning professional services proposals that encompass financial, commercial and technical considerations.

People Management

  • Direct leadership of the technical services department heads, including succession planning and capability development.
  • Support the development, appraisal and wellbeing of professionals within the technical services teams.
  • Responsible for coordinating technical services resources across projects, business units and P&Ls.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for the technical team’s sustainable growth from the current staff count of approximately 110 to over 150 people throughout the AMP8 period and beyond.

Commercial Management

  • Build the pipeline, convert opportunities to backlog and lead the technical services department to deliver revenue and margin.
  • Ensure technical services are delivered efficiently and profitably, supporting margin improvement through innovation, standardisation and best practice.

Role Requirements

  • Background in STEM or appropriate transferrable skills.
  • Experience in managing technical teams.
  • Strong track record of administering successful contracts at project and framework level.
  • Experience of forming and implementing business development strategies and turning this into profitable work.
