Position Summary

The Director of Statistical Methodology will drive methodological innovation within Data and Quantitative Science (DQS) andDrug Development, tackling statistical challenges through actionable, project-based solutions.

As a hybrid of leadership and technical contribution, this role blends:

  • Matrix leadership—collaborating across functional teams to advance long-term statistical goals
  • Individual contributor—researching, developing, and implementing novel statistical solutions

The ideal candidate will:

  • Engage stakeholders to identify and resolve critical statistical innovation problems
  • Mentor junior statisticians while fostering a culture of curiosity, inclusivity, and high performance

Key Responsibilities

1. Innovate & Advise

  • Drive cutting-edge statistical methods and study designs across all therapeutic areas
  • Translate scientific research agendas into statistical frameworks, and vice versa
  • Advise senior leadership on business-impactful statistical topics, aligning insights with regulatory and commercial objectives

2. Collaborate & Communicate

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to influence stakeholder decisions via clear, accessible interpretation of technical findings
  • Simplify complex statistical concepts for non-expert audiences to bridge gaps between research and decision-making

3. Develop & Lead

  • Enhance technical expertise in statistical methodologies (e.g., Bayesian methods, adaptive designs) and maintain thought leadership via publications, presentations, and scientific communities
  • Build knowledge in clinical trials and drug development, ensuring alignment with regulatory and commercial needs
  • Mentor junior statisticians through personal coaching, training curricula, and fostering an environment of innovation

4. Cultivate Leadership & Culture

  • Communicate DQS’s mission and values inspirationally to inspire pride and alignment
  • Champion diversity, inclusivity, and psychological safety, encouraging open dialogue and process improvement

About the Work Environment

BMS’s workplace structure depends on the nature of the post:

  • Site-essential roles: 100% onsite presence at assigned facility
  • Site-by-design roles: Hybrid option with ≥50% onsite—onsite collaboration is foundational
  • Remote/field-based roles: Requires occasional physical travel for engagements

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Statistics/Biostatistics/Data Science with 9+ years in pharmaceutical R&D, academia, or government
  • Proven track record of driving statistical innovation and leadership in dynamic environments

Technical Expertise

  • Core expertise (with publications) and broad working knowledge of:
    • Bayesian Methods | Adaptive Designs | Real-World Evidence (RWE) | Predictive Modelling | Machine Learning (ML) | Decision Analysis
  • Deep familiarity with drug development processes, regulatory/statistical frameworks, and industry standards
