About The Landmark Trust
The Landmark Trust is an ambitious and distinctive charity, dedicated to rescuing historic buildings in distress and reviving them for modern use. For over sixty years, it has curated an extraordinary portfolio of approximately 200 buildings across England, Wales, Scotland, and a small selection in Italy, ranging from modest cottages to grand architectural masterpieces.
Once restored, these buildings are rented out for holidays—creating thousands of visitor experiences annually—while generating the income required to ensure their long-term conservation and sustainability.
About The Role
The Chief Executive will lead the Landmark Trust into its next evolution, safeguarding its unique identity, culture, and reputation while maintaining its ambitious, innovative spirit and financial resilience.
Reporting to the Chair and Board, this position demands strategic vision, operational oversight, and leadership—combined with heritage sensitivity and business acumen. You will be responsible for:
- Establishing the strategic direction of the organisation
- Overseeing a complex operational and hospitality business model
- Championing fundraising and advocacy efforts
- Cultivating a committed workforce with deep empathy for the organisation’s core values
- Representing the Trust with warmth, authority, and authenticity
- Inspiring trust among stakeholders and the public by upholding exquisite heritage while driving forward progress

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Define and implement the Trust’s long-term strategic priorities
- Drive innovation while preserving the organisation’s purposeful heritage ethos
- Foster partnerships with external stakeholders to enhance impact

Operational & Business Governance
- Lead the day-to-day operations of a diverse portfolio of historic properties
- Oversee financial sustainability and long-term solvency
- Manage a complex mix of hospitality services, fundraising, and conservation efforts

Fundraising & Advocacy
- Elevate awareness of the organisation’s purpose and mission
- Build and nurture relationships with donors, benefactors, and ambassadorial supporters
- Develop creative fundraising strategies to ensure vibrant growth

Team Direction & Culture
- Motivate and connect with a passionate, multidisciplinary team across diverse roles
- Embed a culture steeped in deep respect for heritage, transparency, and ambition

- External Representation
- Communicate authoritativeness and authenticity in public and governmental engagements
- Advocate for the organisation’s vision, ensuring it resonates emotionally and intellectually
Requirements
- Experience: Proven track record of executive-level leadership in charity, heritage, or hospitality sectors
- Heritage Sensitivity: In-depth understanding of cultural heritage conservation, values, and governance models
- Business Acumen: Sharp financial and operational expertise to balance commercial sustainability with non-profit priorities
- Stakeholder Engagement: Ability to influence and motivate boards, staff, and the public with clarity and vision
- Authenticity: Strong relationship-building skills, with warmth and drive that aligns with institutional values
