Overview

SME Europe

Mastercard’s Commercial & New Payment Flows (CNPF) business is focused on digitising and scaling payment opportunities by capturing new payment flows, including B2B transactions.

Within CNPF, Mastercard’s Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) business concentrates on:

  • Building differentiated propositions catering to the unique needs of SMEs
  • Leveraging partnerships, data-driven sales, and customer engagement
  • Strengthening channel distribution with non-traditional players, such as SME Wholesalers, ISVs, and Payment Facilitators

The SME segment remains a strategic priority, where Mastercard aims to empower underserved businesses through:

  • Simplifying payment acceptance and supplier payments
  • Improving working capital via innovative solutions
  • Fostering digital transformation
  • Driving financial inclusion through robust partnerships with banks, fintechs, and platform providers

The Role

The Director, Working Capital Analysis & Supplier Acceptance, SME Europe, will lead the strategy, analytics, and execution of initiatives designed to enhance supplier acceptance and adoption within SME ecosystems. This critical position drives working capital efficiency across buyer-supplier networks by leveraging:

Rooted at the nexus of finance, payments, and commercial strategy, this role translates complex working capital dynamics into scalable solutions that:

  • Accelerate supplier onboarding
  • Improve cash conversion cycles
  • Unlock value for both buyers and suppliers

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute cash flow and working capital optimisation strategies, supporting Sales Teams and Customers in the SME supplier space, especially for Virtual Card flows
  • Collaborate with Sales, Product, and Partnerships teams to design SME supplier acceptance strategies that:
    • Increase supplier penetration
    • Enhance transaction flows
  • Act as a thought leader on:
    • SME liquidity challenges
    • Supplier enablement
    • Working capital optimisation
  • Ensure clear return-on-investment (ROI) scenarios for all stakeholders

SME Supplier Working Capital Analysis & Performance Reporting

  • Develop supplier and vertical-specific business cases to improve Cashflow and Working Capital, with a focus on:
    • Days Payable Outstanding (DPO)
    • Days Sales Outstanding (DSO)
    • overall liquidity for SME buyers and suppliers
  • Quantify and benchmark working capital benefits of various payment solutions (e.g., virtual cards, supply chain finance) using internal & external data

Supplier Acceptance & Ecosystem Development

  • Drive initiatives aimed at increasing SME supplier acceptance of digital payments across key verticals, including Wholesale Trade
  • Identify barriers to supplier adoption, such as
    • Cost sensitivity
    • Operational complexity
    • Regulatory constraints
  • Develop and implement mitigation strategies for barriers identified
  • Support SME suppliers in enabling their buyers to adopt modern payment methods

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with:
    • Mastercard (MA) Sales team
    • Risk, Compliance, Product, and Operations
  • Shape acceptance tools, onboarding journeys,, and incentive structures
  • Collaborate with:
    • SME suppliers
    • Financial institutions
    • Fintechs to co-develop solutions
  • Deliver executive-level management reports, dashboards, and insights that inform strategic decisions and opportunities for both internal and external stakeholders

Requirements

About You

  • A Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Business Administration
    • Finance
    • A related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in:
    • Working capital consulting
    • Corporate finance
    • Supply chain finance
  • Deep expertise in:
    • Cash flow and working capital optimisation (e.g., DPO, DSO)
  • Proven experience in:
    • SME ecosystems
    • Supplier enablement
    • B2B payments
  • Additional experience in payment networks, financial institutions, or high-growth fintech is an advantage
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to link data insights to business outcomes
  • Analytical Excellence: Advanced proficiency in:
    • Data interpretation
    • Data storytelling
  • Commercial Acumen: Structure insights into revenue-generating initiatives
  • Leadership & Influence: Drive change across functions and stakeholders
  • Communication: Simplify complex data into compelling narratives
  • Execution Focus: Deliver actionable outcomes in high-speed environments
