Location: Hook Norton Veterinary Hospital Hours: 40 hours per week
Working Pattern:
- Monday: 8:00am – 4:00pm
- Tuesday – Friday: 10:00am – 6:00pm or 10:30am – 6:30pm
- No weekend work Salary: Dependent on experience and knowledge
About the Role
We are seeking an organised and detail-oriented Dispensary Assistant to join our busy Small Animal team.
Working in the heart of the hospital, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the dispensary. You will be responsible for supporting the safe dispensing of medications, maintaining accurate stock levels, and ensuring compliance with practice protocols and relevant legislation.
This customer-facing role requires someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, can manage multiple priorities, and has excellent attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities
Dispensing
- Prepare and dispense medications accurately under the direction of veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses.
- Label prescriptions accurately and ensure all dispensing records are maintained correctly.
- Maintain accurate client and patient medication records.
- Record and report any dispensing discrepancies in accordance with practice procedures.

Stock Management
- Monitor stock levels and maintain adequate supplies of medications and consumables.
- Place daily stock orders as required.
- Receive, check, unpack and rotate stock deliveries.
- Ensure stock is stored appropriately and within manufacturer guidelines.
- Assist with stock takes and stock audits.
- Assist with chemotherapy medication ordering and management.
- Ensure compliance with relevant veterinary medicines legislation and practice protocols.
Dispensary Standards
- Maintain a clean, organised, and efficient dispensary environment.
- Monitor and record refrigerator temperatures in accordance with practice protocols.
- Ensure dispensary equipment and storage areas are maintained appropriately.
- Support the wider clinical team with dispensary-related queries and requests.
Client Support
- Processing repeat prescription requests.
- Liaising with clients regarding medication availability.
- Explaining medication collection processes.
- Taking payments.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Ability to work accurately in a busy environment.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Confidence using computer-based systems.

Desirable
- Previous pharmacy or dispensary experience, ideally within a veterinary practice.
- Familiarity with Robovet.
- Knowledge of veterinary medicines and commonly used small animal medications.
- Understanding of veterinary medicines legislation.
- Experience managing stock and ordering processes.

Reporting Structure
This role reports directly to the Head Nurse, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Pharmacy Team.
