Position: Resident Doctor in Minimal Access Cardiothoracic Surgery (ST7+/Post-CCT Equivalent)

Fellowship Overview
24 Hours Per Week Clinical
- Covering Theatres and supporting Toufan Bahrami once theatre cases are completed, the successful person will cover the Patients in ITU.
Remaining 6 + Hours Per Week
- Reviewing Patients Post Op
- Expected to join Monthly Cardiac MDT meetings
- Prepping for Cases
- Planning future cases
- Admin
An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an ambitious Cardiothoracic Surgery trainee to undertake a dedicated Fellowship in Minimal Access Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Harley Street Clinic, London, under the supervision of Mr Toufan Bahrami, an internationally recognised consultant cardiothoracic surgeon.
This fellowship is designed for senior trainees (ST7-ST8 or equivalent) or recently appointed consultants seeking advanced exposure to modern minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery within a high-volume independent practice. The successful Fellow will gain extensive operative experience, participate in peri-operative patient management, and develop the technical and clinical skills required for independent consultant practice.
The fellowship provides comprehensive training in minimally invasive cardiac surgery alongside conventional adult cardiac surgery, with significant operative responsibility appropriate to the Fellow’s level of experience.

- Assisting and performing cardiothoracic surgical procedures under consultant supervision.
- Participation in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, including minimal access valve surgery and advanced cardiac procedures.
- Pre-operative assessment, patient clerking and informed consent.
- Daily ward rounds and ongoing inpatient management.
- Post-operative review and management of patients within the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU).
- Prompt assessment of deteriorating patients and communication with the supervising consultant.
- Participation in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Maintenance of accurate clinical documentation and high standards of clinical governance.
- Supporting enhanced recovery pathways and delivering high-quality patient-centred care.
Operative Exposure
The fellowship offers training and experience in a broad range of procedures, including:
- Minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery
- Minimal access cardiac surgery
- Conventional valve repair and replacement
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (including total arterial revascularisation and off-pump CABG)
- Endoscopic vein harvesting
- Arterial and venous conduit harvesting
- Median sternotomy and wound closure techniques
- Chest drain insertion and management
- Temporary and permanent pacing systems
- Peri-operative management of complex adult cardiac surgical patients
Operative responsibility will be tailored to the Fellow’s experience and competence, with progressive autonomy throughout the fellowship.
Person Specification
Essential
- ST7-ST8 Cardiothoracic Surgery trainee or equivalent experience.
- Successful completion of FRCS (Cardiothoracic Surgery) or equivalent stage of training.
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
- Experience in adult cardiac surgery.
- Current Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS) certification.
- Excellent communication and multidisciplinary team-working skills.
- Driven and exceptional work-ethic is a necessity.
