Job Description: Cloud Migration Solutions Architect
Purpose of the Role
Drive AWS infrastructure and application migration waves from initial design to execution, ensuring technical solutions are robust and aligned with programme objectives. Discovery work is critical in this role—experience is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities

Lead migration architecture & design
- Design end-to-end AWS migration solutions covering infrastructure and application layers.
- Lead discovery exercises using tools such as AWS Application Discovery Service or AWS Migration Hub.
- Assess current state environments, dependencies, and risks ahead of migration.

Translator & strategist
- Convert discovery findings into AWS migration designs and wave plans.
- Select appropriate migration strategies:
- Rehost
- Replatform
- Refactor
- Design target state architectures, including:
- Compute (EC2, Lambda, etc.)
- Storage (S3, EBS, etc.)
- Networking (VPC, VPNs, etc.)
- Security (IAM, KMS, etc.)

Collaboration & alignment
- Work alongside delivery and project managers to ensure the technical approach aligns with programme timelines.
- Support execution of migration waves using tools such as:
- AWS MWS (Migration Hub Strategy), AWS DMS (Database Migration Service), AWS Application Migration Service.
- Resolve technical issues proactively during execution.

Documentation & compliance
- Produce architecture documentation and design artefacts for governance and sign-off.
- Liaise with security, change, and transition teams to ensure designs meet:
- Organisational requirements
- AWS Well-Architected Framework
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Proven track record driving AWS migration waves from design through execution.
- Strong AWS infrastructure expertise:
- VPC design, EC2, networking, storage services.
- Robust experience around application dependencies and integration points within AWS.
- Hands-on discovery experience (critical—not optional).
- Experience working across multiple migration waves in a programme setting.
- Working knowledge of AWS migration tooling such as:
- MGN (Migration Hub)
- DMS (Database Migration Service)
- AWS Application Discovery Service
- Migration Hub
Desirable
- AWS Certification (e.g. Solutions Architect Associate/Professional preferred).
- Experience in large-scale transformation or migration programmes.
- Familiarity with AWS Well-Architected Framework.
- Awareness of governance frameworks and change processes, including:
- RFCs
- RAID logs
Key Skills & Attributes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate technical detail clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfortable working under pressure with multiple concurrent workstreams.
- Exceptional documentation skills.
