Domestic Assistant
Location: Harplands Hospital, Hilton Road, Stoke on Trent, ST4 6RR
Hours: 30 hours per week – 5 days over 7, including weekends
Salary: £25,272.00, plus Serco benefits
About the Role
Responsible for providing a high-quality cleaning, catering, and general support service to the ward-based team, ensuring a warm, homely, and safe environment for patients.
Main Accountabilities
- Maintain work areas and communal spaces in line with schedules, following cleanliness best practices and infection control protocols.
- Use cleaning equipment effectively, inspecting and reporting any faults, and ensuring proper cleaning and storage after use.
- Prepare and serve meals—setting tables and delivering three main meals per day, plus snacks/drinks—while checking meal temperatures.
- Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff, and colleagues to ensure a supportive atmosphere.
- Assist with additional duties as required after receiving appropriate training.
- Adhere strictly to Health and Safety regulations, including fire safety procedures and protection of vulnerable groups.
- Maintain alarm awareness and respond to incidents in a calm and compliant manner.
- Follow trust-guided procedures for fire safety and emergency protocols.
Required Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Good general education, with strong reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
- Customer-focused experience in a high-service environment.
- Excellent common sense and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Understanding of cleanliness, hygiene, and general maintenance.
- Clear communication skills and compassionate attitude towards patients.
- Reliability, flexibility, and adaptability to change.
- Capacity to work effectively as part of a team.
- Emotional resilience with a capacity for clear, calm crisis response.

Desirable:
- NVQ Level 1 or 2 in cleaning (domestic or healthcare).
- Basic Health and Safety certification and Food Hygiene training.
- Prior experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
- Disability awareness or mature life experience.
