About the Opportunity
The Dose Controller plays a key role in ensuring that radiological exposures for personnel working in nuclear facilities are closely monitored, accurately recorded, and kept as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP). The role provides real-time dose oversight, supports planning for radiological work, and ensures compliance with UK radiation protection legislation and site-specific arrangements.
Key Responsibilities:

- Track cumulative dose exposure and ensure individuals remain within statutory and site limits.
- Maintain accurate dose logs and documentation in line with regulatory requirements.
- Escalate issues where dose trends approach thresholds or unexpected readings occur.
- Support job planning by providing radiological dose rate information and forecasts.
- Contribute to the development of safe systems of work and radiological job packs.
- Assist in estimating predicted dose for work tasks and ensuring ALARP principles are embedded.
- Advise on radiological hazards and required control measures before work begins.
- Liaise with Health Physics Monitors, RPS, operational teams, and supervision to coordinate safe radiological working practices.
- Communicate dose status clearly to workers during tasks, ensuring awareness of exposure.
- Support debriefs and lessons learned relating to radiological performance and unexpected exposures.
- Ensure all dose control activities meet the requirements of:
- Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR17)
- Nuclear site licence conditions
- Local rules and radiological safety procedures
- Participate in audits, inspections, and investigations relating to dose control.
- Maintain auditable and secure dose-related records.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
