Drainage Engineer – Water, Drainage & Environmental Engineering Roles
(UK-Based, Across Multiple Grades & Locations)

We’re seeking Drainage Engineers from Senior Consultant to Associate Director to strengthen our technical capabilities across the UK’s most significant rail, highway, aviation, and Local Authority projects.
About the Role
Your Contribution
WSP is growing its expertise in water, drainage, and environmental engineering, delivering strategic, concept, and detail drainage designs from start to finish. As part of our national sustainable water management team, you’ll work on groundbreaking work, from highway, rail, and airport drainage to surface/sustainable foul water systems. Within this role, you’ll:
- Design and deliver projects from concept to completion, ensuring they meet high technical standards, deadlines, and commercial targets.
- Lead wide-ranging civil engineering projects, including infrastructure, site, and transport schemes.
- Deliver specialist drainage solutions for the UK’s most prominent transport infrastructure (e.g., Network Rail, HS2, National Highways, Local Authorities).
Additional Responsibilities (For Senior Grades & Above)
- Client & stakeholder management: Direct engagement with clients, attending progress meetings and presentations.
- Team leadership: Manage drainage engineering teams, support their technical growth, and resource project workloads effectively.
- Strategic influence: Shape whether the future of drainage engineering within WSP, leading award schemes and technical innovation.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We’re looking for technical experts with a passion for sustainable solutions. Essential requirements:
- Chartered/Incorporated Engineer status (or eligible) or a relevant degree in Civil/Drainage Engineering.
- 5+ years post-qualification experience in sustainably designed drainage systems.
- In-depth knowledge of UK design standards, Building Regulations, Health & Safety, and sector codes of practice.
- Proficiency in drainage design software (e.g., Civil 3D, Causeway Flow, MicroDrainage).

Key Technical & Leadership Skills
- Experience in highway, rail, or airport drainage (or a focus area).
- Technical expertise in asset management, prevention of surface water flooding, and sustainable drainage solutions (SuDS).
- Proven ability to manage projects, balance quality/commercial priorities, and lead cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication (written/verbal) skills for client-facing and internal presentations.
