Drainage Engineers – Join WSP to Shape the Next Generation of Infrastructure

We’re expanding our Water, Drainage and Environmental Engineering team to deliver cutting-edge solutions for high-profile transportation infrastructure projects across the UK, including rail, highways, aviation, and local authority schemes.
This opportunity is open to Drainage Engineers at all grades—from Chartered or Incorporated status up to Senior Consultant and Associate Director—and welcomes flexibility in location across UK offices.
About the Role
WSP is seeking skilled professionals to spearhead drainage designs from concept to completion, ensuring technical excellence, sustainability and commercial success. Your work will shape critical infrastructure, addressing foul/surface water management, asset management, and modelling capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of complex drainage systems for projects such as rail, highways, airports, and site development.
- Move projects forward from concept to execution, ensuring compliance with UK Building Regulations, standards, and Health & Safety regulations.
- Deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest technical standards.
- Collaborate across teams (including hydraulics, civil engineering and environmental) to create innovative, long-lasting solutions.
For More Senior Roles
- Manage clients by chairing progress meetings and building long-term relationships.
- Lead a team of drainage engineers, fostering their professional growth and resources while ensuring efficient project delivery.
Behind the Scenes at WSP
You’ll join a dynamic sustainable water management team—technical leaders in the field, driving proactive, responsive and collaborative work. Your contributions will impact landmark projects for HS2, Network Rail, National Highways, and local authorities, from feasibility studies to construction.

Your Skills & Experience
We’re looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Chartership (or equivalent) experience in environmental engineering or a relevant degree (role-dependent).
- Proven expertise in designing sustainable drainage solutions and managing infrastructure drainage.
- Technical knowledge of drainage design principles (e.g., Suitable Amendments, Water Industry Regulations) and familiarity with UK standards as well as industry Health & Safety regulations.
- Proficiency in Civil 3D, MicroDrainage/Causeway Flow, or similar drainage modelling software.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects, budgets, and teams, balancing commercial and technical objectives.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder engagement.

✔ Highway/Airport/Rail Drainage ✔ Sustainable wastewater systems ✔ SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) Implementation ✔ Hydraulic Asset Health & Lifecycle Management ✔ Causeway ECO-B (drainage waste modelling) ✔ Hydrological modelling (e.g., WinSLAMM, ASTRA/SWMM).
