Location: Milton Keynes, Northampton, Bedford, or Peterborough Contract: Permanent Salary: Circa £50,000 (dependent on skills and experience)

If so, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. We’re looking for a DSEAR Engineer – Electrical to join our expert-led Process Safety team.

As a recognised Subject Matter Expert, you’ll be central to our compliance with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), ensuring Anglian Water continues to lead the industry in safe, reliable, and sustainable water services.


What You’ll Be Doing

As a DSEAR Engineer, you’ll carry out ATEX inspections and risk assessments across a wide variety of electrical assets within potentially explosive atmospheres. You’ll take ownership of compliance documentation and support any resulting complex remedial work.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting ATEX electrical inspections in hazardous areas under BS EN 60079-17
  • Reviewing classification reports, zone drawings, and other safety documentation
  • Identifying and helping deliver remedial work based on asset risk, cost, and compliance
  • Performing risk assessments aligned with internal codes of practice
  • Auditing appointed persons and external contractors for safety and technical compliance
  • Advising on the selection and installation of ATEX/EX-rated electrical equipment
  • Mentoring and coaching DSEAR Technicians, Apprentices, and Competent Persons
  • Deputising for the DSEAR Technical Manager and representing the business where needed
  • Providing relevant advice and support to the wider business

About You

You’re a highly skilled electrician with:

  • Proven experience in hazardous area compliance, inspections, and safety documentation
  • A strong drive for excellence, always seeking continuous improvement
  • The ability to analyse risk confidently while engaging with stakeholders effectively
  • A sharp eye for detail in both inspections and compliance reporting

To succeed, you’ll need:

Qualifications & Experience

  • A recognised electrical qualification (ONC/OND/NVQ3 or equivalent)
  • CompEx certification (minimum 01–04) – CompEx 05–06 highly desirable
  • C&G 2391 Electrical Inspection and Testing (desirable)
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • BS EN 60079-14 & 17 and DSEAR relevant documentation
    • Practical experience in inspection, maintenance, and risk mitigation in hazardous areas
  • Understanding of flammable gas/liquid risks, and common EX protection concepts (e.g., EXd, EXe, EXi)

Soft Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing detailed technical reports
  • Familiarity with CDM Regulations and contractor auditing
