About the Role
Overview
As a Duty Manager at Places Leisure, you’ll play a crucial role in ensuring our centres run efficiently, drive memberships, and deliver outstanding experiences for our customers—all while representing the Places for People brand.
This varied position demands a motivated, responsible, and customer-focused individual with the flexibility to work across all shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays. You’ll oversee operations, oversee a team of staff, manage customer concerns, and take ownership of corporate priorities like report preparation, recruitment, training, and strategic direction.
Key Responsibilities

People Management & Leadership
- Hire, train, and supervise staff, fostering a positive and productive team culture.
- Drive performance, ensure staff compliance with policies, and resolve team-based challenges.
- Mentor and develop colleagues at all levels.

Customer Service & Membership Growth
- Ensure exceptional customer experiences and address member concerns promptly.
- Implement strategies to grow memberships, boost engagement, and increase revenue.

Physical & Financial Stewardship
- Oversee the day-to-day operation of the centre, ensuring it meets the highest standards of quality and hygiene.
- Monitor financial performance, prepare accurate reports, and meet budgetary targets.
- Manage contracts with partners (e.g. rental agreements).

Strategic Representation
- Attend meetings with senior stakeholders and external partners, representing Places Leisure with confidence.
- Align operations with corporate goals to enhance community impact.

Health & Safety & Safeguarding
- Chair regular safety briefings and incident review meetings.
- Ensure adherence to Places Leisure’s safeguarding policies, including reporting potential risks or incidents.

Pertinent Health & Quality Standards
- Comply with all food hygiene regulations and brand standards.
- Maintain multiple UKAS-validated first aid training certifications.

Requirements
Essential Criteria
- A passion for health, wellness, and customer service in a leisure or care environment.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership in a high-pressure, dynamic team setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills and empathy in handling sensitive customer/employee situations.
- Adaptability and resilience: the flexibility to adjust scheduling (e.g. shift swaps) under notice.
- Minimal prior management experience necessary. Suitable candidates can demonstrate potential through initiative and collaboration.
- Ability to work part-time or full-time based on the business’s needs.
Desirable Criteria
- Proven experience in a supervisory or management role, particularly within a leisure facility, care home, or hospitality setting.
- NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification)—mandatory for the role.
- First aid training/qualifications (advantageous for speed of promotion).
- Commercial awareness: prior involvement in customer acquisition, marketing, or financial budgeting.
Compulsory Qualifications
✅ NPLQ must be held at time of application. ✅ Suitability to work with children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
