About Freedom Leisure & the Role

As one of the UK’s leading charitable leisure trusts, our 37-hour (rota-based) full-time Duty Manager role is instrumental in creating a welcoming space where everyone can thrive.

This busy, varied, and rewarding position sees you:

  • Lead a team of operational staff, ensuring excellent customer service with care and enthusiasm
  • Manage day-to-day operations of our leisure centres to the highest standards
  • Plan and deliver events, support group activities, and champion community welfare
  • Contribute to budgets, performance tracking, and continuous improvement—because every member of the team plays a part in improving lives through leisure

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership:
    • Actively manage and motivate an operational team, fostering a culture of dedication and enthusiasm
    • Foster skill development and collaboration among staff
  • Service Delivery:
    • Ensure high-standard operations across leisure services (gyms, pools, cultural activities)
    • Handle day-to-day responsibilities with autonomy, confidence, and a customer-first mindset
    • Solve problems swiftly, adapt to busy demand, and maintain a proactive approach
  • Budget & Performance:
    • Support centre budgeting and contribute to financial monitoring and reporting
  • Community & Inclusivity:
    • Champion events, activities, and initiatives that strengthen local connections and wellbeing
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Foster a safe, accessible environment for all customers, including those requiring additional support

Required Experience & Skills

To be successful in this role, you should:

  • Proven ability to manage operational staff, fostering trust and performance—even without a formal management background
  • Familiarity with budget tracking, or willingness to quickly develop this skill
  • Strong customer service skills, paired with a passion for problem-solving (e.g. resolving complaints, captivating enquiries)
  • *Experience in a Duty Management or supervisory role (desired but not mandatory—training will be provided)
  • *Government checklist fallback:

Technical (if available):

  • RLSS National Pool Lifeguard qualification (desirable; training options may be available)
  • Enhanced DBS check requirement
  • Physical ability to navigate busy leisure spaces, assist customers, and use equipment

Salary & Commitment

£26,834 per annum 37 hours/week, covering Monday to Sunday (rota-based schedule)
