**HealthySteps Specialist (HSS) – Clinical & Translational Sciences

Department: 10415 Pay Range: $65,124.80 – $108,555.20


About the Role

Kids Are Our Everything.

The HealthySteps Specialist (HSS) plays a critical role in supporting parents and children aged 0-3 as part of a maternal mental health and early childhood program called HealthySteps. Embedded in the pediatric primary care setting, the HSS delivers developmental and mental health assessments, anticipatory guidance, and brief interventions to critically address common parenting challenges—including feeding, behaviour, sleep, depression, and adapting to parenthood.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Administering developmental and mental health screening tools
  • Providing support and guidance to parents/caregivers on critical life topics
  • Offering on-site clinical interventions (e.g., therapy for depressive disorders or parenting stress)
  • Engaging in research, advocacy, and education initiatives related to HealthySteps

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Support Fundamentals:

    • Screen for developmental and mental health concerns in infants/toddlers.
    • Deliver anticipatory guidance and practical support for parents/caregivers.
    • Conduct brief interventions with special attention to depression, parental stress, and parenting behaviour.
  • Research & Scholarship:

    • Participate in Collaborative research (Early Childhood Innovation Network, Children’s Advocacy Institute).
    • Contribute to scholarly publication and Peer-reviewed manuscripts.
    • Engage in educational programs and Workshops focused on early childhood mental health.
  • Advocacy & Education:

    • Teach Parents, families, and patients on Treatment, prevention, and care techniques.
    • Support children’s advocacy efforts and Public Policy initiatives.
    • Provide orientations & training to clinical professionals and Trainees across local, regional, and national platforms.
  • Quality & Compliance:

    • Follow best-practice protocols in ethics, safety, and infection control standards.
    • Ensure complete and accurate Clinical documentation for quality oversight (JCAHO, hospital bylaws).

Requirements

Education

  • Master’s degree in:
    • Social Work
    • Clinical Counselling
    • or a related field (all required)

Licensure & Certifications

(Applicants must obtain one of the following licensures in Washington, DC, upon hiring):

  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Independent Clinical Social Worker (CSW-I)
  • Licensed Professional Counsellor (LCPC)

Experience

  • Minimum: None specified (preferred experience discussed below)
  • Preferred: Three years in early childhood development, child mental health, maternal well-being, or related fields

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Diagnostic Interpretation

    • Formulate diagnoses for acute or chronic mental health disorders.
    • Evaluate psychological test results, social histories, and interviews for actionable insights.
  • Risk Assessment

    • Determine risks for self-harm, family hazards, or endangerment to children.
  • Compassionate & Ethical Practice

    • Integrate ethical concepts into care plans and discussions with families.
    • Maintain confidentiality, cultural competency, and continuing education in mental health standards.
  • Families First Orientation

    • Champion family-centred care and empower families with necessary resources.
    • Ensure clear communication with other healthcare teams, pediatricians, and community services.
  • Commitment to Continuous Improvement

    • Stay updated on emerging research and best practices (e.g., maternal mental health, early childhood development).
