Do you have a passion for helping children learn, grow and thrive? Are you energetic, caring and love working with young children? You could be just the person we are looking for. We are seeking a new apprentice to join our team to provide support and committed care to our children.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

To complete training as per the apprenticeship specification, using work experience gained to support this. You will be required to assist senior staff in the following:

  • Provide quality integrated day care & education for all children within the remit of the Ofsted National Standards and the Early Years Foundation Stage
  • Plan and implement an appropriate curriculum working within the ‘Birth to Three Matters’ framework and the Foundation Stage guidance
  • Support pupils’ learning in the extended school setting, including working with individuals, groups and whole classes using knowledge, experience, specialist skills and training
  • Contribute to the development of a seamless service for children where education and care are part of the daily experiences for all children
  • To liaise effectively with other team members, children and parents/carers
  • To provide a range of stimulating activities, indoor & outdoor, relevant to the age, stage and needs of young children, which encourage and develop all areas of development
  • To observe, monitor and record accurately the development of each child, ensuring that any records are kept up to date and in-line with policies on confidentiality and recording
  • To work in partnership with parents/carers and the team around the child with special needs to ensure full integration
  • To understand and adhere to all the policies to ensure the safety and well-being of all the children, parents and staff
  • Apply behaviour management strategies and techniques to manage behaviour constructively and contribute to a purposeful learning environment
  • Contribute to the creation of an appropriate learning environment through display and classroom organisation
  • Contribute to the creation of appropriate learning resources

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
  • Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
  • Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
  • Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
  • Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
  • Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
  • Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.
  • Create inclusive, child-centred, dynamic, innovative, and evolving physical environments both indoors and outdoors.
  • Create inclusive and supportive emotional environment that enables the child to feel safe, secure, respected and experience a sense of wellbeing; maintaining and prioritising the individual child’s voice.
  • Apply strategies that support children’s ability to manage change, transition, and significant events.
  • Analyse observation evidence to assess and plan holistic individual learning based on a comprehensive understanding of the child’s needs and interests.
  • Facilitate and support child-centred opportunities and experiences based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Provide adult led opportunities and experience based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Use reflection to develop themselves both professionally and personally.

Training schedule

Apprentices will be required to attend Cannock Campus (The Green, Cannock, WS11 1UE) one day a week during term time only.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English and Maths (grade GCSE Grades 9 - 4 or A* - C)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

You will be required to pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Littleton Green Community School is a replacement school for Huntington Primary School which opened on the 9th November 2009. The school is located within the parish of Huntington set on the edge of the beautiful Cannock Chase. Our school is for boys and girls from 3 – 11 and is maintained by Staffordshire University Academies Trust. We also offer sessional day care for children over 3 years in our Nursery and Wrap around and now cater for children aged 2 years in our Saplings Pre-school.
