Are you passionate about supporting childcare providers to thrive and helping ensure children and families can access high-quality childcare?
Gloucestershire County Council is looking for an experienced and motivated Early Years & Childcare Business Officer to join our Early Years and Childcare Team.
About The Role & Team
This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to children, families and childcare providers across Gloucestershire. Working as part of a supportive and forward-thinking team, you will help shape a sufficient, sustainable and high-quality childcare market that meets local needs.
You will work directly with childcare providers across the maintained, private, independent and voluntary sectors, offering business support, advice and challenge to help them develop, grow and respond to changing national and local priorities. This includes supporting delivery of the Government's childcare expansion and wraparound childcare programmes. Using market intelligence and strong partnership working skills, you will contribute to Gloucestershire's Childcare Sufficiency and Commissioning Strategies, helping ensure families can access the childcare they need while supporting providers to build resilient and sustainable businesses.
About You
We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of the early years and childcare sector and experience of supporting or managing childcare provision.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
