Early Years Kitchen Assistant – Barnes Day Nursery and Preschool

About the Role

Bright Horizons is seeking an Early Years Kitchen Assistant to join our Barnes nursery. This position offers 12 hours per week (Monday to Thursday, 10:30am–1:30pm) at £14.15 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Our nursery provides a warm, nurturing environment with:

  • Four tailored base rooms, including two for under-2s
  • A large outdoor play area with age-specific zones
  • An art studio, children’s kitchen, and library space

Responsibilities

As an Early Years Kitchen Assistant, you’ll:

  • Assist the Chef in preparing age-appropriate meals for children.
  • Ensure minimum food wastage while maintaining a clean, safe kitchen.
  • Take charge of kitchen operations in the Chef’s absence.
  • Adhere to dietary requirements, including food allergies and special needs, ensuring clear communication with staff.
  • Work under pressure and collaborate effectively with teams, children, and parents.

Requirements

We’re looking for candidates with:

  • Previous experience in domestic or commercial cooking.
  • A passion for nutrition and promoting healthy eating practices.
  • Knowledge of managing dietary restrictions, particularly food allergies.
  • Food Safety Level 2 (CIEH or equivalent)—this credential must be passed by day one.
  • Understanding of COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
