Fixed-term: 9 months (from September 2026)
The Opportunity
The Division of Global Agriculture and Food Systems, School of Geosciences and Business School are looking for a PhD student to support with evaluating options for circular uses of biomass streams on Scottish farms. This 9-month project will focus on developing marginal abatement cost curves to provide policymakers and farmers with farm-level evidence on which circular interventions offer the greatest environmental and economic returns.

Your Skills and Attributes for Success
- Current University of Edinburgh PhD student in the ‘26/’27 academic year.
- Experience working on projects related to environmental science, agricultural economics, systems modelling, or rural policy.
- Experience synthesising and analysing data from a range of sources.
- Some familiarity with environmental accounting and/or cost-benefits analyses.
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate complex information clearly, both in writing and in oral presentations.
- Ability to work proactively with colleagues and external collaborators with a variety of expertise; understanding and valuing different points of view.

Earth Fellows work on individual and team-based projects which contribute to the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Earth Initiative’s work on climate change research-led impact, innovation, engagement, and teaching.
This post will be appointed at Grade UE07, step 1 which is £41,064 per annum, pro rata (£22.50 per hour).
