Role Overview
Yorkshire Water provides essential water and wastewater services and environmental protection to 5.4 million residents and regional visitors. New legislation, investment, and evolving customer expectations make this an exciting time to contribute to environmental efforts.
We’re looking for an Ecological Data Officer to bolster our Environment Team, specialising in managing, assuring, and applying ecological and hydro-ecological data. Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting regulatory programmes like WINEP and our Biodiversity Performance Commitment
- Ensuring high-quality data drives decision-making across the business
- Collaborating with technical experts, GIS professionals, and external partners
Key Responsibilities
As the Ecological Data Officer, you will:
- Oversee ecological data management for the Environment Team, ensuring datasets are accurate, consistent, and accessible.
- Lead quality assurance (QA) of ecological data from suppliers and ensure conversion to Yorkshire Water’s (YW) storage systems.
- Support biodiversity reporting by providing robust data for forecasting, audit requirements, and regulatory compliance, including WINEP delivery.
- Process and interpret complex hydro-ecological datasets to enable effective project execution.
- Integrate YW ecological datasets with external systems, such as:
- Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS)
- Local Environmental Records Centres (LERCs)
- Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) frameworks
- Develop and maintain data systems for environmental risk management, including protected and invasive species tracking.
- Collaborate externally with organizations like Rivers Trusts, Wildlife Trusts, and CaBA groups to standardize data approaches.
- Support ECSRI systems for ecological data, working alongside internal GIS teams.
- Present data to internal/external stakeholders using tools like Power BI or ESRI Dashboard.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, GIS, or a related discipline.
- Experience managing and processing ecological or environmental datasets, including spatial datasets.
- Proficient working knowledge of GIS platforms (e.g., ESRI systems) and data management principles.
- Understanding of:
- Habitat classification systems
- Protected species data
- Ecological survey standards
- Experience with large/complex datasets, particularly:
- Hydro-ecological or monitoring datasets
- Ability to:
- Ensure data quality within time-critical reporting cycles
- Translate technical data into clear, usable insights
- Experience presenting large datasets to diverse audiences using:
- Suitable software tools
- Background working with:
- Internal teams and external stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills, able to manage competing priorities.
Agility/Driver’s License Requirement
- Must possess a full UK driving licence.
nice-to-have qualifications
- Familiarity with environmental regulatory frameworks including:
- WINEP, WFD, BNG, LNRS
- Background developing/managing multi-disciplinary GIS-based systems.
- Experience using digital dashboards for reporting and analytics.
- Regulatory work experience and previous exposure to external audits.
- Experience interrogating publicly available datasets (e.g., the Environment Agency’s ecology explorer).
- Familiarity with ecological survey guidelines like:
- UK Habitat Classification
- BNG metrics with habitat condition assessments
