About the Role
The Council’s Planning Services manage the natural and built environment, supporting sustainable development across North Yorkshire.
The Environment & Design workstream is a multidisciplinary team including ecology, building conservation, archaeology, and landscape/urban design, working to shape the county through place-making.
In this Ecologist role, you will:
- Provide expert advice on biodiversity protection, development impact assessments, and biodiversity net gain initiatives.
- Align local planning with statutory requirements and the Council’s growth agenda.
- Offer support for the Local Development Plan and collaborative projects with partners, landowners, and communities.
The role operates on a hybrid model: office-based at Scarborough or Northallerton with remote working, supplemented by occasional travel across North Yorkshire.

In this varied and rewarding position, you will:
- Deliver specialist ecological advice on:
- Planning applications
- Site allocations
- Biodiversity net gain proposals
- Site (onsite) visits where needed
- Assist with Local Development Plan framework and reviewing divisinity impacts on site allocations.
- Contribute to nature-positive policies and guidance for developers, landowners, and public stakeholders.
- Coordinate ecological programmes/projects with partners and communities.
- Lead habitat creation/restoration, including collaboration with the minerals and waste industry.
- Design and deliver training programmes to build internal capacity in biodiversity/ecological competencies.
- Support statutory duties under:
- Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act 2006
- Environment Act 2021
Requirements
- A degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant eco-environmental/ecology subject.
- Broad, foundational knowledge of UK nature conservation legislation, planning policy, and associated guidance.
- In-depth familiarity with biodiversity net gain requirements and its implementation through development planning.
- Expertise in:
- UK wildlife habitats and species profiles
- The UK landscape planning system
- Stakeholder negotiation and partnership collaboration
- Self-directed management of timelines and workloads
