Ecologist
Job Title: Ecologist
Location: Birchwood, Warrington Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
About the Role
Help shape the future of land restoration, regeneration, and sustainable development. We’re seeking an experienced Ecologist to join a multidisciplinary environmental consultancy working across planning, quarry restoration, land regeneration, and development projects.
This job isn’t a traditional ecology consultancy role. You’ll be involved from the outset, identifying ecological constraints, influencing planning decisions, and crafting practical, commercially viable solutions that balance environmental objectives with successful project delivery.
Collaborating closely with planning, engineering, and operational teams, you’ll conduct preliminary assessments, assess ecological risks, and determine when specialist surveys are needed. You’ll also coordinate external consultants, ensuring their recommendations align with commercial viability and project goals.
Echoing in biodiversity strategy, you’ll support Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), providing technical expertise on habitat creation, enhancement, and long-term management plans for diverse projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), habitat surveys, and ecological site assessments
- Identify ecological constraints and opportunities in planning, restoration, and development projects
- Provide practical, compliant ecological advice to support project delivery
- Determine when specialist surveys or technical input is required
- Manage and coordinate external ecological consultants to ensure recommendations are proportionate and commercially sensible
- Review ecological reports and checks to meet project requirements
- Support planning applications through ecological consultancy
- Contribute to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), including:
- Habitat creation/enhancement strategies
- Long-term monitoring and management planning
- Biodiversity Metric implementation
- Develop strong relationships across planners, engineers, project managers, regulators, and ecologists
- Conduct site visits at active quarry, restoration, and development projects

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
