Ecologist
Help Deliver Sustainable Development and Positive Biodiversity Outcomes Across the UK
Tetra Tech is seeking to recruit an Ecologist to join our Ecology team based in Southampton or Abingdon. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a diverse portfolio of renewable energy, residential, commercial and infrastructure projects while developing your ecological consultancy career within one of the UK's leading environmental teams.
Working alongside experienced ecologists and multidisciplinary specialists, you will support the delivery of ecological surveys, assessments and reporting that help clients achieve successful project outcomes while protecting and enhancing biodiversity. This role offers exposure to a wide variety of habitats, species and development sectors, providing excellent opportunities for professional growth and technical development.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
As an Ecologist, you will support the delivery of ecological surveys, assessments and environmental reporting across a broad range of projects throughout the UK. You will assist with habitat and protected species surveys, ecological data collection and the preparation of technical reports that inform planning and development decisions.
Working closely with senior ecologists, planners, environmental consultants and engineers, you will help deliver practical ecological solutions that balance development needs with environmental protection. Your responsibilities will include supporting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), habitat management proposals and wider ecological advisory services.
The role combines field-based survey work with office-based technical reporting, providing valuable experience across multiple project sectors and ecological disciplines. It is ideally suited to someone looking to build a long-term career within ecological consultancy and develop specialist expertise over time.
Your Impact in this Position
Your work will contribute directly to the collection of accurate ecological information that supports planning applications, environmental assessments and sustainable development projects. By helping identify ecological constraints, opportunities and risks at an early stage, you will play an important role in protecting biodiversity and supporting informed decision-making.
In your first year, you will develop confidence in undertaking habitat and protected species surveys, contributing to ecological reporting and building strong relationships with colleagues and project teams. As your experience grows, you will take increasing ownership of survey programmes, technical assessments and project deliverables while developing specialist knowledge in areas such as Biodiversity Net Gain, Ecological Impact Assessment or protected species work.
Over the longer term, you will build the technical capability, project experience and professional credibility required to progress your ecological consultancy career, contributing to complex projects that deliver lasting environmental and sustainability benefits.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
