Economist – Director
Job Description & Summary
About the Role
PwC’s Strategy& Public Sector and Economics team is expanding its Economics capability and is looking to strengthen its leadership team.
We are seeking an experienced Director with a background in applied economics to lead engagements across central government, infrastructure, and defence.
The Director will:
- Help lead and scale PwC’s Economics business
- Focus on thought leadership, client delivery, and team leadership
- Provide strategic direction, commercial leadership, and operational oversight to drive profitable growth, high-quality delivery, and market differentiation
- Work closely with Partners, Managing Directors, and leaders across Consulting, unlocking market opportunities
What Your Days Will Look Like
- Leading and growing a team of 30+ economists (onshore and offshore)
- Business development – building or developing a network of contacts across public and private sectors
- External communications – leading high-profile presentations to clients and stakeholders
- Cost-benefit analyses, economic appraisals, and risk-adjusted option modelling for defence and security programmes
- Analytical and quantitative modelling, including economic forecasting and statistical assessments
- Serving as a senior advisor, translating complex economic concepts into digestible and compelling narratives
- Providing leadership and oversight across project workstreams, ensuring quality assurance
- Developing client accounts and supporting business development
- Coaching junior economists to build future leadership capability

This Role Is For You If You Have
- 10+ years’ experience as an economist (preferably in consultancy or government)
- Expertise in economic policy in government, infrastructure, and/or defence
Essential
- Experience using the Green Book 5 Case model (training/budget guidance for Public Sector projects)
- Proven senior leadership experience in building and leading an economic team
- Experience delivering complex public sector or defence programmes
- Green Book principles application in developing business cases
- Economics degree (or international equivalent).
- Experience collaborating and influencing within a matrix organisation

- Knowledge of Magenta book (HM Treasury guidance on risk & contingencies)
- Commercial/sales experience
Key Skills
- Strong analytical skills for quantitative problem-solving, with high attention to detail
- Critical thinking to evaluate information, make informed decisions, and innovative solution development
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English
