I wrote twice in The Baron about Blue Heron Research Partners, where I work with a half dozen former Reuters colleagues and other journalists and am sharing an update. We recently opened a London office and are seeking an editor or junior editor full-time to start work in April.
As you can see at www.blueheronrp.com, we are a growing independent research firm with experienced former journalists doing qualitative due diligence interviews about companies, senior executives and industry sectors. Our clients are institutional investors, and we do deep-dive interviews with former colleagues, competitors and customers to gain a better understanding of a subject's personality, approach to leadership and impact on a team or company culture.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
As an example of our work cycle, I do about 370-400 interviews a year with senior executives around the world in virtually every type of business and industry. Most calls are recorded and transcribed, then edited to capture top-line bullet points in a tight summary above the full transcript. The company is young and growing, offering a "sweet spot" for reporting, editing and interviewing skills. All interviews are private and none of our research is published. You'll see from our team a cross-section of journalists from major news and financial research firms, a reasonable gauge for prospective applicants for the nature of our firm.
