Experienced Education Lawyer – State Funded Schools (Regulatory, Risk & Resolution)

At VWV, we’re seeking a technically excellent and engaging Education Lawyer with a specialism in public law matters for academies and state schools to join our Regulatory, Risk & Resolution team as the state-funded schools lead.

Our Regulatory, Risk & Resolution team supports clients across the education, charity, and healthcare sectors, helping them navigate:

Led by Tabitha Cave, our team consists of 6 partners, 22 lawyers, and 4 support colleagues—growing through dynamic work driven by legal and sectorpolitical developments.


The Role

We’re looking for an experienced Education Lawyer with deep expertise in public law matters for state-funded schools, including:

  • Advising multi-academy trusts (MATs), single-academy trusts (SATs), and state schools on:
    • Registration & Inspection (Ofsted, sector-specific regulations)
    • Critical incident management
    • Admissions arrangements & appeals
    • Complaints procedures
    • SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) and discrimination claims
    • Pupil discipline, investigations, and fair decision-making
    • Safeguarding
    • Civil claims and judicial reviews
  • Collaborating with our AMS (Academy Matters and Schools) sector team for comprehensive support.

Ideally, you’ll bring: ✔ Strong sector profile and technical excellence ✔ Exceptional communication and project management skills ✔ Experience or existing client relationships in state-funded education (though not compulsory) ✔ Hybrid working capability—we’d like you to work in-office a minimum 2 days per week, with flexibility otherwise.
