BASF plc is a subsidiary of BASF SE, marketing a wide range of BASF products in the UK. We provide agricultural solutions, automotive refinish paints, acrylic monomers, fine chemicals, intermediate chemicals, speciality chemicals, dispersions, and plastics. Our manufacturing site in Bradford produces additives for the coatings and cosmetics industries.


EHS Manager – Bradford

What You Can Expect

As EHS Manager, you will take ownership of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) responsibilities within our registered COMAH facility. Key responsibilities include:

Core Duties

  • Maintain and drive continual improvement of BASF’s Responsible Care Management System across all EHS disciplines, ensuring full alignment with UK legislation (COMAH, Environmental Permitting Regulations) and company policies.
  • Oversee all regulatory interactions (e.g., Environment Agency, HSE)—managing permits, ensuring deadlines and legal compliance, and coordinating site-level statements such as environmental permits, risk assessments, and environmental reporting.
  • Lead preparation for, and representation at, audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews, including internal and external assessments.
  • Advise and support the business on all EHS topics, including but not limited to:
    • Contractor EHS management
    • Risk assessments (e.g., work at height, confined spaces)
    • Waste management policies and compliance
    • Implementation of robust EHS processes
  • Act as a strategic voice of the Site Leadership Team, influencing all levels of decision-making:
    • Drive EHS performance improvements via root cause analysis for incidents and near misses.
    • Embed cutting-edge EHS initiatives and corporate best practices across the site.
    • Ensure rapid interpretation of new or changing regulations.
  • Foster a Safety Culture of continuous improvement by actively engaging stakeholders and employees, building trust and transparency through clear feedback mechanisms.
  • Maintain active external communications with regulators, emergency services, local councils, and neighbouring sites:
    • Collaborate on emergency preparedness planning and conduct simulations with external partners.
    • Maintain open dialogue during regulatory reviews or enforcement actions.

Waste Management Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the scale-up of waste characterisation activities, working with external service providers to ensure:
    • Safe handling, labelling, and documentation of waste.
    • Compliance with transport, storage, and disposal regulations.

Requirements

To succeed in this challenging yet rewarding role, we’re looking for:

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant discipline, such as:
    • Safety Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Environmental Science
    • OR equivalent work experience demonstrating formal competence.
  • Demonstrating professional commitment through:
    • Cartered status (e.g., IOSH) or progress towards it
    • For environmental safety specialities: NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent).
  • Up-to-date, hands-on knowledge of UK EHS legislation with a focus on COMAH-regulated sites, waste management, confined spaces, and major accident hazard environments.

Key Experience & Skills

  • Proven track record in EHS performance management, compliance due diligence, and cross-functional regulatory liaison.
  • Environmental expertise (air emissions, water, and waste streams) highly desirable.
  • Exceptional organisation, task management, and documentation skills with a high level of accountability.
  • Strong problem-solving ability combined with influencing & leadership (from shop-floor raising issues to C-suite reporting).
