Electrical Design Engineer
Electrical Design Engineer – Staffordshire (Near Burton-on-Trent)
Location: Commutable from Derby, Lichfield and Burton-on-Trent Salary: £50k+ Sector: Rail & Heavy Machinery Engineering
Our client, a near-century-old industry leader, specialises in the design and manufacture of bespoke rail solutions for global supply chains. With continued growth and ambitious expansion plans, they are now seeking an experienced and proactive Electrical Design Engineer to join their design and development team near Burton-on-Trent.
About the Role
Our client is on the lookout for a talented Electrical Design Engineer to work closely with mechanical engineers, manufacturing, and project teams to deliver high-quality, reliable, and maintainable electrical systems for locomotive units and associated rail equipment.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, testing, and documenting electrical systems while ensuring compliance with technical specifications, industry standards, safety regulations, and project deadlines.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will manage the following key tasks:
- Design & Development:
- Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control system layouts, aligned with project requirements and engineering standards.
- Design and specify electrical components, panels, and systems, ensuring full compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality regulations.

Collaboration & Integration:
- Work closely with mechanical, systems, and manufacturing teams to integrate electrical designs into the broader product architecture.

Prototyping & Testing:
- Support prototype development, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems.
- Revise and update technical documentation, drawings, and bill of materials (BOMs) based on testing results.

Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement:
- Assist in troubleshooting electrical design or system faults during manufacturing, testing, and field service.
- Contribute to CI (Continuous Improvement) initiatives by proposing design optimisations and standardisation where applicable.

Project Management:
- Monitor and report project progress to ensure timely delivery.
Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Qualification & Experience:
- Degree-level qualification (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in an electrical design role, ideally within locomotives, heavy machinery, or industrial equipment.

Technical Skills:
- Proficient in electrical CAD software—preferably AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
- Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- High-level expertise in:
- Electrical systems design & control systems
- PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)
- Applicable industry standards and safety regulations

Soft Skills:
- Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Attention to detail and meticulous approach to work.
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to manage multiple design tasks and meet tight project deadlines.
