Electrical Engineer

Electrical Engineer – FORTNA

About the Role

Job Title: Electrical Engineer

The Electrical Engineer is a task-based role within FORTNA’s Electrical Engineering team, responsible for the design and documentation of electrical and pneumatic controls of Fortna’s Material Handling Systems (MHS).

The ideal candidate has:

  • A background in Electrical Engineering / design
  • Experience in providing leadership to Electrical Engineering project teams
  • The ability to produce high-quality deliverables during project implementation
  • Familiarity with FORTNA’s Integrated Design Methodology

Responsibilities

Leadership & Project Coordination

  • Lead medium-scope and less complex projects through the detail design and implementation phases, including:

    • Development of RFP/Supplier Selection requirements
    • Planning for electrical control panel phasing
    • Creating Electrical Engineering work plans
    • Generating design approval packages
  • Provide electrical system input to the Project Engineer during design reviews to ensure requirements are understood.

  • Support the transition from Detailed Design to Final Engineering.

  • Review and contribute to Description of Operation (DOO) & Functional Specification (FSD) documentation.

Collaboration & Meetings

  • Facilitate project meetings (agendas, minutes, and follow-ups).

  • Provide electrical system input while informing the MHS implementation plan.

  • Work closely with the Project Engineer during Speed/Speeds & Feeds reviews.

Technical Deliverables

  • Lead Controls Layout review meetings with internal teams and clients.

  • Ensure design acceptance in collaboration with the project team.

  • Direct support resources to develop project deliverables, meeting Drawing Quality Control (DQC) standards, including:

    • Electrical device layout package
    • Control panel fabrication package
    • Electrical installation package
    • Pneumatic layout and installation package
    • As Built documentation

** Reporting & Risk Management**

  • Compile and communicate progress via project status reports.
  • Attend project update meetings and update ADRA (Assumptions/Decisions/Risk/Actions) items.
  • Escalate technical risks to the engineering team.
  • Attend Client meetings as required.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct site visits to assist with installation and commissioning.
  • Support lessons-learned documentation.
  • Provide input on DQC process improvements.
  • Enhance department standard documentation/procedures for efficiency.
  • Contribute to industry best practices and technological advancements.

Technical & Methodological Compliance

  • Utilise AutoCAD, E-plan, and Promis-e for drawings.
  • Align with current FORTNA and design standards.
  • Keep accurate design notes.
  • Attend/participate in company training as required, ensuring reliability and follow-up.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Relevant electrical design qualification with suitable experience in complex automated material handling systems.
  • Familiarity with conveyor control process (e.g., photo-eyes, solenoids, variable frequency drives (VFDs), line scanners, print-and-apply applications).
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple suppliers.
  • Strong teamwork, collaboration, and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Experience with MS Project and MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency in E-Plan for electrical design.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and self-motivation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, organisational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for project support.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing Engineering projects involving cross-team collaboration.
  • Motor control panel design experience.
  • Understanding of CE, UKCA, OSHA compliance requirements.
  • Comprehension of ProfiNet, Ethernet IP network design.
