- Strong foundation in circuit analysis, digital electronics, and measurement systems
- Comfortable working hands-on with hardware and testing
Responsibilities
- Design and implement low-voltage power systems
- Develop shutdown circuits (SDC), emergency braking interfaces, and safety systems
- Integrate batteries, BMS, motor controllers, and power distribution units
- Debug electrical and communication faults
- Support technical inspection and safety documentation (ESF, LVEV forms)
- Participate in vehicle testing and competition preparation

Team Description
Bristol Formula Student AI (FSAI) is the University of Bristol's autonomous racing team, competing in the Formula Student AI competition. We design, build, and race fully autonomous vehicles, integrating advanced AI, robotics, and real-world engineering systems.

For the 2026 season, we are developing our own Autonomous Platform Cup (APC) vehicle. This project focuses on building a complete low-voltage autonomous race car platform, including power systems, safety circuits, and vehicle electronics.
Joining FSAI means working in a highly motivated, interdisciplinary team and gaining hands-on experience in building real autonomous systems under strict technical and safety regulations.
Role Description - Electrical Engineer (APC)
You will take a leading role in the design, implementation, and testing of the electrical and power systems for our APC vehicle. You will work closely with mechanical and AI teams to ensure that all systems meet Formula Student safety regulations and operate reliably in competition.
Key responsibilities
- Designing and implementing low-voltage power systems
- Developing and maintaining shutdown circuits (SDC), emergency braking interfaces, and safety systems
- Integrating batteries, BMS, motor controllers, and power distribution units
- Debugging and troubleshooting electrical and communication faults
- Supporting technical inspection and safety documentation (ESF, LVEV forms)
- Participating in vehicle testing and competition preparation
Qualifications
We are looking for motivated students who are eager to apply their academic knowledge to real-world autonomous vehicle systems.

Essential
- Currently studying Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related fields
- Good foundation in circuit analysis, digital electronics, and measurement systems (e.g. Analysis and Design of Electrical Systems, Digital Circuits, Engineering Practice)
- Basic understanding of power electronics, electric machines, or energy systems (e.g. Electrical Energy Conversion, Power Electronics & Drives)
- Familiarity with embedded systems and signal processing concepts (e.g. Embedded Computing, Signals and Communications)
- Ability to read schematics, datasheets, and technical documentation
- Willingness to work hands-on with hardware and testing
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
Applicants are not expected to meet every requirement. Strong motivation and willingness to learn are highly valued.
Desirable
- Experience with student engineering projects, robotics, EV systems, or Formula Student
- Familiarity with low-voltage vehicle power systems (<60V), batteries, BMS, relays, and fuses
- Experience with CAN, UART, or similar vehicle communication protocols
- Awareness of electrical safety and safety-critical system design (e.g. shutdown circuits, emergency systems, redundancy)
- Experience supporting technical documentation and inspections
