Electrical Engineer – Port of Southampton
Ports of ABP seaports is the UK's largest maritime infrastructure operator, managing a network of 21 ports nationwide. Responsible for handling a quarter of the UK’s seaborne trade, we contribute £7.5 billion annually to the British economy—and this legacy will continue to grow.
We pride ourselves on our people-first culture, celebrating diversity, nurturing talent, and championing internal progression while prioritising safety above all else.
Our Port of Southampton stands as the UK’s #1 vehicle handling port, processing 600,000 vehicles yearly and serving 3 million cruise passengers across its five terminals. The team is expanding, and we’re seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team across the port estate, including both our main port and the Marchwood site.
We’re looking for a qualified Electrical Technician with at least an HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering and ideal candidates will have experience with HV (High Voltage) works, renewables integration, HV switching, maintenance, and project delivery—whether it’s irritation or projects valued up to £10 million.
The Role
As Electrical Engineer at Port of Southampton, you’ll play a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing our electrical infrastructure while driving forward renewable energy and operational efficiency. Reporting to senior management, you’ll collaborate with consultants, contractors, and internal engineers to deliver a wide range of works inclusively across the portfolio—from operational electrical networks to lighting, HV/LV supplies, and critical plant control systems.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
