Estimating Engineer

Location: North East England

Salary: £30,000-£35,000

About the Company

Our client is a specialist engineering manufacturer that designs and produces bespoke low-voltage (LV) switchgear solutions. Its product portfolio includes distribution boards, panel boards, transformers and containerised substations, delivering high-quality engineered solutions across a range of industries.

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Estimating Engineer to join a growing engineering business. This role is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive and commercially viable quotations for electrical infrastructure and switchgear projects.

Working closely with sales, engineering and project delivery teams, you will analyse project specifications, interpret technical documentation and produce detailed cost estimates that meet both customer requirements and business objectives.

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for LV switchgear and associated electrical projects, including materials, labour and overheads.
  • Review project specifications, technical drawings and customer requirements to produce competitive tender submissions.
  • Collaborate with sales, engineering and project teams to ensure a smooth transition from tender to project delivery.
  • Analyse project scope to ensure estimates are technically accurate and commercially robust.
  • Maintain accurate estimating records, tender documentation and customer communications.
  • Identify potential commercial and technical risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Support continuous improvement of estimating processes, systems and best practices.

Key Requirements

  • HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of electrical systems, LV switchgear and relevant industry standards.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and time management skills.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience in an estimating or engineering role within the electrical engineering or switchgear sector.
  • Experience working within a small to medium-sized engineering business.
  • Good commercial awareness with the ability to balance technical and financial considerations.
