About The Team
Our team includes 100+ engineers and fleet support specialists responsible for:
- Technical oversight of passenger fleets
- Key relationship management for customer fleets and rolling stock investments.
About The Role
Electrical & ETCS Systems Engineer, Porterbrook
Role Purpose
Serve as the technical expert for ETCS and key train electrical systems, advising internal teams and stakeholders across Fleet Services, Engineering Services, Projects, Strategy & Sustainability, procurement, and Long Marston.
Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership:
- Lead Porterbrook’s electrical and ETCS systems expertise for traction and rolling-stock
- Direct technical investigations into equipment failures, warranty claims, and joint diagnostics, including site visits

Project Management & Consulting:
- Participate in complex/innovative projects as a technical project partner
- Manage internal engineering consultancies with oversight of consultants/suppliers for high-quality outcomes

Incident & Compliance Management:
- Lead actions on National Incident Reports (NIRs) for multi-fleet or high-complexity incidents
- Represent Porterbrook in cross-industry forums/workshops, leading engagements on behalf of the group

Fleet Strategy & Commercial Engagement:
- Collaborate with Fleet Platform Strategy team to deliver long-term fleet solutions
- Maintain market awareness of new products and evaluate innovations across ETCS and electrical systems

Supplier &Relationship Development:
- Foster supplier partnerships and monitor engineering/quality standards, including site audits
- Support product development, obsolescence tracking, and business-case formulation

Digital Transformation:
- Provide input to Porterbrook’s Digital Services, assisting with AI and remote condition monitoring initiatives

Operational Oversight:
- Support graduate students and work experience placements
- Track progress, present reports on workstreams, and ensure compliance with Porterbrook procedures/safety standards
Skills & Experience
-
Technical: Essential: 5+ years in railway traction/rolling-stock (involving customer relations, project/supplier management, commercial understanding). Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or related fields; membership (or pursuit of) a chartered/incorporated engineering institution. Deep expertise in ETCS and electrical systems, railway standards/legislation, asset management, maintenance, and whole-life cost analysis.

Management & Communication: Project/budget management mindset, financial fluency, and attention to detail Exceptional written/oral communication, negotiation skills, team collaboration Ability to train junior personnel/support training programmes

Industry-Specific Knowledge: Familiarity with remotely monitored systems, electrification/data analytics, and infrastructure and an awareness of leasing/commercial contract frameworks.
