Electrical Instrumentation & Control Engineer (Perm/Fixed Term)

Role Summary

Due to ongoing project expansion and technological advancements, Our Client is seeking a skilled Electrical Instrumentation & Control Engineer. This key position will support the design, development, and deployment of electrical and control systems for space missions. The role holds strategic importance within the organisation, directly contributing to mission-critical systems that enable space exploration. It offers an exciting opportunity to work on innovative projects that will shape the future of space propulsion and instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, develop, and implement electrical, instrumentation, and control systems within our supply chain, ensuring adherence to ECSS standards for space applications.
  • Act as the primary liaison between external electrical/electronic system contractors and internal multidisciplinary teams.
  • Apply ECSS standards (e.g., ECSS-E-ST-50, ECSS-E-ST-55, ECSS-Q-ST-30) throughout all phases of the system lifecycle, from initial design to sing and maintenance.
  • Review and validate microcontroller and FPGA-based control systems for embedded applications.
  • Analyse electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control system architectures to meet project specifications.
  • Lead system sing, validation, and commissioning activities, confirming performance aligns with mission objectives.
  • Contribute to fault tolerance, redundancy, and safety mechanism design to comply with space standards.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and control system issues during assembly, integration, and sing stages.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration into overall spacecraft systems.
  • Prepare technical documentation including design reports, s procedures, and verification plans, aligned with ECSS guidelines.
  • Drive continuous improvement in control and electrical systems for enhanced reliability and efficiency.
  • Maintain compliance with industry safety, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a relevant discipline (Master's preferred).
  • Proven experience in electrical design, instrumentation, and control systems within aerospace, defence, or space environments.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of ECSS standards, specifically ECSS-E-ST-50, ECSS-E-ST-55, and ECSS-Q-ST-30.
  • Hands-on experience with space mission sing, including thermal, vibration, and radiation assessments.
  • Demonstrable problem-solving skills and ability to perform fault diagnostics and system optimisation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to the highest standards of quality and safety.
  • Capable of working independently and effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Familiarity with ECSS software standards and systems engineering processes.
  • Experience designing space-qualified electronics with high reliability and radiation tolerance.
  • Knowledge of high-performance analogue and digital circuitry for instrumentation.
  • Experience in control system design, including PID controllers, sensor interfaces, and communication protocols such as UART, CAN, MIL-STD-1553, or SpaceWire.
  • Understanding of spacecraft power systems, both high-voltage and low-voltage, and their management.

Work Environment & Conditions

This role involves working within a diverse environment, including office spaces, cleanrooms, electronics laboratories, and s facilities. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work safely around hazards such as chemicals, electrical systems, and in elevated or outdoor settings. Flexible working hours, including occasional nights, weekends, or holidays, may be required. The position also involves manual handling, working at heights, and exposure to noise and physical hazards.
