About the Role

We seek an Electrical Safety Technician to lead safety Advocacy within our R&D teams. This hands-on role will:

  • Define and uphold safe working practices for early-stage electrical prototypes, from ideation to validated design.
  • Bridge Electrical Engineering and EHS (Environmental Health & Safety), ensuring best-in-class safety from prototype conception to commercialisation.

Ideal candidates have:

  • A technical electrical background (prototyping/R&D environments preferred).
  • Safety leadership aptitude and a safety-first mindset.
  • Proven experience setting, documenting, and defending safe working protocols.

Responsibilities

1. Safety Leadership & Culture

  • Develop and iterate risk-tiered safety protocols for prototypes, aligned with IEC 60335 principles.
  • Serve as primary authority for electrical safety decisions—determining when prototypes are safe for engagement, power-on, or testing.
  • Standardise electrical safety procedures, risk assessments, and SWIs (Safe Work Instructions) for the lab.
  • Drive safety culture via toolbox talks, briefings, and lessons-learned sessions*.
  • Collaborate with EHS for company-wide safety alignment, reporting, and compliance frameworks.
  • Proactively identify and escalate safety risks, with clear actionable guidance for teams and management.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

2. Prototype Safety Assessment

  • Assess early-stage prototypes for construction risks, wiring practices, insulation gaps, or compliance fails.
  • Provide technical advice on wiring, components, creepage, clearance, cords, strain relief, and battery systems.
  • Conduct PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) and safety testing (leakage current, dielectric strength, earth continuity).
  • Support abnormal operation tests (stalled motors, blocked airflow, fault simulations) under safe parameters.
  • Advise on battery system safety (charging, BMS, protection) and troubleshoot electrical faults to safe resolutions.
  • Design and build validation rigs and safety fixtures in compliance with standards.

3. Compliance & Collaboration

  • Collect and document safety observations, test results, and build feedback for engineering/compliance teams.
  • Support internal pre-compliance reviews and external test lab interface.
  • Perform electrical equipment inspections and testing, establishing pass/fail criteria for prototype sings-off.
  • Evaluate fire/heat resistance, material safety, and design compliance.

Requirements

1. Safety & Leadership Experience

  • Steadfast commitment to electrical safety as a professional discipline (not mere compliance).
  • Prior experience developing or refining safe work procedures, risk assessments, or R&D safety protocols.
  • Comfortable as a safety authority: clear decision-making on technical risks and confidence answering engineers/managers.
  • Experience in early-stage environments where safety frameworks aren’t yet defined (build-from-scratch ecosystems preferred).

2. Technical Expertise

  • Deep knowledge of consumer products/appliances, with preference for pros with mains/low voltage + battery systems experience.
  • Hands-on skills in:
    • Wiring, circuit modification, and troubleshooting.
    • Working with laboratory.test equipment (leakage/ dielectric testers, hipot testers).
    • PAT testing (desirable).
  • Familiarity with IEC 60335 or similar electrical safety standards (not essential but advantageous).
  • Understanding of safe design component criteria (insulators, earthing, leakage limits).

  • Industry experience where safety frameworks were created vs. applied (ideal profile).
  • Background in regulated electrical products (appliances, consumer devices).

4. Personal Attributes

  • Attention to detail with a safety-first instinct.
  • Proactive about safety (especially in fast-moving settings).
  • Adaptability in evolving processes.
  • Exceptional communication — translating complex risks into digestible guidance for diverse stakeholders.
  • Long-term commitment to safety leadership within electrical engineering.
