Electrical Service Engineer
Electrical Engineer – Medium Voltage & Low Voltage Switchgear

This position reports to Electrical Engineer – Medium Voltage & Low Voltage Switchgear
About the Role
We are looking for a skilled Electrical Engineer to join ABB’s Automation Energy Industries UK Electrical team, playing a key role in delivering the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and project engineering support of Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) switchgear, protection relays, and Variable Speed Drive (VSD) systems.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll support critical power generation, distribution, and motor drive applications across:
- Oil & gas
- Marine
- Renewable energy sectors
Your role will include:
- Installing, commissioning, maintaining, troubleshooting, upgrading, and retrofitting MV/LV switchgear, protection relay, and VSD systems
- Providing remote and on-site technical support and engineering expertise throughout the full service lifecycle
- Developing protection relay settings and coordination studies for safe, reliable power system operation
- Contributing to power system studies including short-circuit, load flow, arc flash, harmonic, and EMC assessments
- Diagnosing and resolving faults on ABB VSD systems (ACS1000, ACS5000, ACS6000, ACS800, and ACS880)
- Preparing technical documentation, engineering drawings, testing procedures, work packs, and method statements
- Collaborating with customers and internal teams on project scope definitions, bids, and service growth opportunities
- Ensuring compliance with ABB quality standards, IEC requirements, and international regulations
- Delivering technical training and knowledge transfer

Work Model
This position offers a hybrid work model from Aberdeen, St Neots, or Daresbury.
Qualifications & Requirements
Essential:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- Proven experience in MV/LV electrical distribution systems (LV, 11kV, and 33kV)
- Experience in commissioning, testing, maintenance, and support of MV/LV switchgear, protection relays, and/or VSDs
- Strong knowledge of protection relay configuration, power system studies, and electrical fault analysis
- Solid grasp of electrical power systems, IEC standards, and electrical safety regulations
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently
- Drive for continuous improvement
Desirable (not essential):
- Experience with ABB products/software (e.g., PCM600, Omicron Test Universe, MNS/MNavigate, Asset Vision/Field Information Manager)
- Knowledge of AVR, excitation systems, industrial cybersecurity, and MV/LV switching operations
- Background in energy, industrial, marine, or offshore environments (certifications a plus)
