Role: Electrical Service Engineer
Type: Permanent (Full Time)
Location: Aberdeen OR St Neots OR Daresbury
Mode of Work: Hybrid (3-days a week onsite)
Job Description:
We are looking for a skilled Electrical Engineer to join ABB's Automation Energy Industries UK Electrical team, playing a key role in delivering the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and project engineering support of Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) switchgear, protection relays, and Variable Speed Drive (VSD) systems.
Working across a diverse portfolio of projects, you'll support critical power generation, distribution, and motor drive applications within the oil & gas, marine, and renewable energy sectors. Your Role and Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll help run what runs the world, by taking on meaningful work that drives real impact.
- Install, commission, maintain, troubleshoot, upgrade, and retrofit MV/LV switchgear, protection relay, and Variable Speed Drive (VSD) systems.
- Provide technical support and engineering expertise both remotely and on customer sites across the full service lifecycle.
- Develop protection relay settings and coordination studies, supporting safe and reliable power system operation.
- Contribute to power system studies including short-circuit, load flow, arc flash, harmonic, and EMC assessments.
- Diagnose and resolve faults on ABB VSD systems, including ACS1000, ACS5000, ACS6000, ACS800, and ACS880 drives.
- Prepare technical documentation, engineering drawings, testing procedures, work packs, and method statements.
- Collaborate with customers and internal teams to define project scope, support bids, and identify service growth opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with ABB quality standards, IEC requirements, and applicable international regulations, while delivering technical training and knowledge transfer.

Qualifications for the Role
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience) and proven experience working with MV/LV electrical distribution systems (LV, 11kV, and 33kV).
- Proven experience commissioning, testing, maintaining, and supporting MV/LV switchgear, protection relays, and/or Variable Speed Drives (VSDs).
- Strong knowledge of protection relay configuration, power system studies, and electrical fault analysis.
- Sound understanding of electrical power systems, IEC standards, and electrical safety regulations.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and drive continuous improvement.
- Experience with ABB products and software, including PCM600, Omicron Test Universe, MNS/MNavigate, and Asset Vision/Field Information Manager – desirable, not required.
- Knowledge of AVR and excitation systems, industrial cybersecurity, and MV/LV switching operations – desirable, not required.
- Experience delivering projects within energy, industrial, marine, or offshore environments, supported by relevant professional certifications – desirable, not required.
